(This man is in his forties, still in good shape. He goes to his desk, opens a bottom drawer and reaches deep inside, removing a well-worn baseball which he holds up to admire.)
This is it. The very ball that won the championship for our high school, and a college scholarship for me.
It was the bottom of the ninth. What a cliche, right? But cliches are born from moments like this - two outs, one man on first.....I have two strikes on me, then three balls. (Shakes his head) Funny, baseball is the only game where men like to have three balls!
(He stands in a batter's pose)
I was not the leading hitter on the team - but I was the top hitter in clutch positions......and that's what this was. I never liked football for just this reason....you're behind 21 points with two minutes to go....no chance, why play? Why risk getting hurt? Just to show you can stick with it? At least in baseball, you have a chance down to the last pitch. One pitch, it's all down to one....pitch...
(He watches, in slow motion as the imaginary ball comes his way, swings the imaginary bat, watches the ball fly off. He stands there smiling)
One man, one vote. That's what it all boils down to in the end..........until the referee gets to ten and the bell rings.... .until the final out.......until the polls close.....Each and every vote matters....that's why....I'm leaning to yes.....to running....for governor....even though it's not gonna be easy......even though it looks like it's gonna be an extra inning game.....
(He shields his eyes, then drops the bat and raises his arms)
Over the fence. One swing, we win. Each person has a chance down to the last minute....
(Lights down as we hear the crack of a baseball being hit out of the park.)
