(This is a professional woman, circa the 1970s, dressed in a business outfit, hair perfect,, very taut, she walks up to the podium)

Hi, you might remember me because I have been here from the first meeting of this branch of NOW. For those new here today, I will recap a little bit about myself - while I was in college, although I had the opportunity, I decided not to marry.... because the man who wanted to marry me wanted me to stay home only - to raise children and help his career.  But I wanted to pursue a career....for me.  And so I interviewed and chose a position with a company that actually had some women in management positions.

I worked hard, and, got a few promotions...and, in my spare time (deep breath remembering).....I took care of my mother until she passed away last year.

So I have been working at the same company for 25 years now,and I have risen to the exalted position of assistant to the Vice-President in charge of Human Relations.

       (Thinking, remembering)

Twenty-five years I have watched my friends from college have babies, now some have grandbabies, and I have been waiting ....waiting for my chance.

Well, the Vice-President in charge of Human Relations just retired..... and I applied for the job......(chokes up a bit)...today they informed me that....I am....too old for the position.....that they needed someone new......and able to deal with the younger employees......

They also told me  (hard to say).....that the new Vice-President....is ...surprise!....a man they hired from outside the company.

(Furious)  And .....he is......57 years old!......ten years older than I am!

(Getting even more upset)  And that is the reason I helped found this group!  It is 1973 and we are treated like...like.... modern day nuns!  No matter how hard we work, how high we climb.....we can never be the pope!

(She goes to sit down, stops, looks back)

Now if that isn't bouncing against a glass ceiling, I don't know what is!

          (She exits.)
