Monologue Mania Day # 747 by Janet S. Tiger (c) Feb. 29, 2016

What to do?  A day with several options - Day # 747, same as the plane, and Feb. 29 -it is leap day!  Sadie Hawkins Day!  Three- count 'em, three!- possibilities in one!  Okay, maybe I can only squeeze in two......well, there's always....next year.....or in another four years!

Forever Young
(in honor of Leap Year and Sadie Hawkins Day)
A monologue by Janet S. Tiger

(A very, very old woman moves slowly onstage.  She has on a tiara and a sash and she waves at the audience)

Thank you all -  you wonderful folks in Senior Channel Land for celebrating my 25th birthday!  Yes, I am legitimately only 25 years old, even though you might imagine I am lying, I am not....here is my birth certificate!

(She holds up a paper and points)

There it is - in black and white!  Born on February 29th in the year of 1916!

It has been a great 25 years - even better when I learned about Sadie Hawkins - because of being able to propose on a leap year....I've had seven husbands!  All much older than me!  My first marriage was when I was a baby - only five years old, and my husband 21!

All my children are older than I am, and my grandchildren, too!  In a few years, the same will be true for my great grandchildren, and I look forward to finding another husband....maybe one a few years older than I am.....how about a thirty-five year old!

(She turns to toddle off, stops, looks back)

Ooh, I just love Leap Year!  See you when I'm fifty - but not if I see you first!

(She exits to put some more years under her garterbelt)

Monologue Mania Day # 745 Respect for the Ocean by Janet S. Tiger (c) Feb. 27, 2016

From the play  - this is the scene where the President of the Congregation talks with the Rabbi about how dangerous it is to consider what the rabbi is considering.

                                                      Respect for the Ocean©
(The President of the Congregation monologue)

(The President of the Congregation is not a big man, not tall, but he is imposing, and he is not happy with what he sees the rabbi might be about to do.)

Okay, my friend, I have a few words for you......words my mother taught me when I was a little boy at Coney Island.  We would go and I would be itching to jump into the water, and she would get me ready and then she would make me sit down and listen for a minute.  And she would say.....I always had to remember to have .....respect for the ocean.

I was a kid, four, maybe five years old.  I had no idea what she would be talking about, but I would nod, and she would ask me if I understood, and I'd say yes, because all I wanted was to run into that beautiful ocean......and she would shake her head.  'It means, bubbleh.....no matter what the ocean looks like, how peaceful, how quiet, how sweet.....the ocean is bigger, and the ocean will always win.  So, have fun, but remember that ...you must always have respect for the power of the ocean.'

I have found those words to be true for many things......it pays to have respect for the things that are more powerful than we are.

You, my dear rabbi, are about to start playing in the ocean.....and I can see in your eyes, you do not have the respect you need.  What ocean you ask?  We are 1000 miles from the Pacific.....but an ocean can be many things.....the temptation of  money, of power....of a beautiful woman.......you are a married man, and you are thinking you can put up a sand castle and make it beautiful and have a big wall to protect it, a wall of silence.

And you think if you build the wall tall enough, the ocean will not get over it.....but you are very wrong.  I learned that the first day at the beach.  I made a beautiful creation, with shells and all types of items I found on the shore.  But I didn't notice the tide had turned - as it always does - and the water came back with at first, just a bit of a bite, but then.....a wave took away all my work......

(He turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Build your future not with sand.....have your family safe above the level of danger from the ocean.....

       (Lights down, end of scene)

(Very old woman enters, slowly, with cane or walker – slow…..She waves at a chair.)

Please sit down young man.  I would offer you a cup of coffee, but I don't want to, so let's get to the reason for your visit.  Why I asked you here.  It's very simple.

I am staying in this house, and you are not going to ask me to move.  Ever.  Again.  Not because you want to sell it for your sons, or you want a new car...... or because you want the money to pay off gambling debts, not because of any reason......because I am staying in this house.

There, very simple.

      (Raises her hand)

Before you start to talk, please listen.

When you first notified me of your intentions, I almost walked across the street and took the train.  Yes, I know there's no station across the street, but there is a track, and I know if I would have to move from here it would kill me, so I figured, I'd let the train do it fast and easy.

Then I did a little thinking.  At 95, that's all I can do, mostly.  And what I thought was that you are going to change your mind.

Here is why.  Your wife - almost ex-wife - was the granddaughter of my dear friend, Beatrice.  Beatrice had done well, and my family was not doing well, so Beatrice bought this house and told me I could live here until I died.  When Beatrice died, her daughter, Amanda, kept that promise,   And when Amanda passed away, her daughter, Karen, your almost ex-wife, kept that promise.

They all honored the promise........ because they were honorable people.

(Darker) When Karen was murdered, you inherited this house, and now, you are telling me to leave my home,  The only home I have lived in for over 60 years.  I am 95, and I may be getting on, and the world has changed since I was born, but that was not honorable and it is not honorable.

       (Raises hand)

I am almost done.  When you first informed me that I was going to be evicted, I was in shock.  But I am sturdy.  Once I got past my original idea of the endless train ride, I pulled myself together.  I have outlived two husbands and my only son, and now, I plan to finish living my life right here, because a promise is a promise.

Now, I want you to read something.

(Hands him a note, watches him read)

You seem shocked.  It is shocking, isn't it?

A letter to me from your almost ex-wife, just before she died.  A letter telling me that if anything happened to her, to go to the police, that you - her almost ex-husband - were probably responsible.

Please don't look at me like that!  I have not gone to the police because I figured, it would make life....difficult for you.  Am I right?  They never found Karen's killer, did they?  And you, the almost ex-husband, had no real alibi......

      (Nods and smiles)

A little shocking isn't it?  And no, of course it isn't real.  But right now, copies of this letter are with two lawyers - and if I die in any way not natural, a car accident, a burglary gone wrong, that letter gets opened and sent to the police.

Or if I am evicted........

      (Listens)

I typed it myself on a computer.  I may be 95, but I love those things!  And her signature was easy....I have a few of her old letters, and I just copied it.

      (Laughs)

Blackmail is just a silly word!  What does it mean?  Mail that is black?  I am surprised black people have not protested this word!

This is merely.......the wisdom of old age that does not want to move......

So young man, I think I will get some coffee for us ....you look a little pale.....

(She turns to leave, stops looks back)

Or is it because.....that letter is one.....your almost ex-wife SHOULD have written....

(She exits, but not from her home!)

Monologue Mania Day # 743 Walking My Brain (revised) by Janet S. Tiger Feb. 25, 2016

This monologue is having a birthday - two years old - first posted on Feb. 25, 2014  Day  #13.

(A very dapper older gentleman is seen coming onstage.  He is dressed with a hat and looks                  all put together - and he is walking with a leash....not a dog, mind you, just the leash.  If you               can get one, the leash that stands without a dog attached is optimal, but if not, just a                            dragging leash will do.

He is a very happy sort of chap, and, even before he speaks, we know he is British.  How?                  We just know.  He walks around the stage, tipping his hat to those he meets, until, finally,                   he meets you and he is SO happy to see you.)

(Veddy British)    Well, hello!  I haven't seen you in an absolute age!  How are you?  You look magnificent!  Healthy and fit!  Why it must be, how many years?

            (He tilts to listen, laughs)

The years do go fast.  (Listens)  Oh,  this.....

            (He indicates the leash)

No, I haven't lost my dog, although that's what so many people think for some reason!  But I am quick to correct that misconception -  I do not have a dog, nor have I ever owned a dog, nor do I - short of some incredible change of my belief systems which include believing dogs should be free animals like those in the zoos - no, I am not walking a missing dog........(relishes this)  I am walking.... my brain.

            (Waits for reaction)

It does seem a bit unusual, doesn't it.  But once I explain, you, too, will understand, just like those gentlemen in the hospital finally had to - after my solicitor apprised them that I was entitled to my views, just as anyone is.

Yes, I firmly believe that walking is an essential exercise.  One that be accomplished after running, and skiing, and cycling and all the others... are no longer feasible.

So I walk my body for the health of all the billions of cells that depend on regular exercise and fresh air.

But the brain?  What of its needs?  I do not hold with the belief that sitting in front of a computer for an hour  trying to remember what 358 times 22 equals is the best way of keeping one's brain in good working order!

No!  I believe that the best way is to get out and meet people...people you know, people you have never known - people are the best exercise for the brain.

And here's where this leash comes in -  when I have it, and I am walking my 'brain' - there are few people who do not notice that the leash is empty.

Not of the brain, of course, but the leather part.

Their faces are more entertaining than any show on the telly - and it's live entertainment - for free!  The best price if you ask me....

And very few can resist asking me about my missing dog.  They smile, they laugh - oh, and children totally understand when I tell them I'm walking my brain!

So after I have been out for an hour or so, I feel as if my body and my brain have had a good, healthy walk, and I - and my brain - are ready for a nice cup of tea and a nap.

My dear friend, it has been a delight to see you - I hope we can bump into each other again.

I say goodbye - and my brain says goodbye, too!

(He turns, gives the leash a nod.)

Good brain!  Now we'll get some sugar for you.......

(He listens as if his 'brain' is responding, laughs and exits.  As he leaves, we hear whistling....could it be...'Walking My Brainy Back Home...'   Hope not!  This is crazy enough!   The end.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those unfamiliar with the final reference, the song is Walking My BABY Back Home

(Woman in late teens, early twenties, enters, she is a little nervous, looks at audience, listens)

We got our first guinea pig when I was five.  We called him Brownie, because he was chocolate with black streaks, and looked like a big, delicious brownie!

And so it began.

Sometimes I would smuggle him to school, and everyone would have fun playing with him - until I got caught.  It happened when he smelled a boy named Bryan eating a sandwich with some lettuce, and started squeaking right in the middle of math class!  Everyone started laughing, and even the teacher let him run around for a few minutes.  It sure was better than math!

Over the years, we had many guinea pigs, including some born on Christmas - that was the best gift I ever got!

Watching the mothers give birth was amazing, and made me wonder if I would ever have babies of my own - and if they would be so cute.

(She takes a breath, then rubs her arm)

I started burning myself when I was ten, just after ......no, I don't want to talk about that yet.  The guinea pigs helped me hide from my pain a little, and I realized I could avoid the need to feel pain if I held my favorite pig, Miss Piggy.

Now, I like to look at pictures of guinea pigs on the Internet.  There are so many cute guinea pigs!  Some of them do tricks, and there are guinea pigs all over the world!

       (She hugs herself, spins around)

I wish I could have one of my guinea pigs here.....I know they won't allow any pets in this place, and until I am on my own, safely, for a few months, a pet is not recommended, but I miss them so much!  They're so cute, and cuddly, and they never say mean things.....and, maybe they sometimes bite, but never on purpose...only if you have food in your hand.......and they.never, ever.....hurt you.....

(She looks at her arms again, tracing a scar)

And.....maybe......I didn't succeed in really hurting myself because....I was holding my guinea pig, and she told me..... to get help.....

(She turns to leave, stops, looks back)

And that's why I love guinea pigs......

(She walks off slowly, to a land of guinea pigs)
