(The woman comes onstage, she is hesitant, shakes her head, no)

No, thank you.  That one cup of coffee is enough, and no, I don't want to sit just yet.  Today was a little much.  You asked me some questions that were difficult, officer.  No, I did not know him.  No, I never knew him, ever.  I just passed him in the street and I knew.

         (She listens)

How could I tell that young man was going to do something crazy?

        (Takes a deep breath)

Because he had dark eyes........

        (Listens)

No, not the color of his eyes.....what was behind his eyes.....he had...dark eyes....eyes that showed he was not in this world.....eyes that had a deep pain, but beyond the pain.....a darkness that was about to be shared......

(Listens, bows head, holds hands together, wringing them)

I'm so glad that you were able to stop him before he could hurt anyone.....and that he will get the help he needs........I'm getting tired, I would like to leave.....your questions bring up too much pain....you see....my son had those eyes before he killed his father.....that's how I knew..... does that explain it?

(She gets up, walks slowly off, turns and looks back)

I just wish....someone had seen my son's dark eyes.......in time.....

         (She exits)
