(Woman stands, brings out list and sits in the wheelchair)
This is the list of things I did today......
(She holds it up, waves it around)
It started off with the usual thousand things before breakfast......then proceeded to the hundred items surrounding breakfast, followed by the morning chores, lunch and a break of oh, three minutes to go to the bathroom.
Then I saw an item on the list that was a bit perplexing. It said....
(Reads from list)
'Send thank you note to Aunt Marie for birthday present'
Why did this cause perplexation? Was it because I had already sent the thank you? No, of course not. I call people, but I stopped sending written thank yous after my mother had her first fall.....but that's another story.
No, the reason this was so disturbing, is because.....my Aunt Marie died three years ago! And she had not sent me a birthday present since her death!
So.....I looked at the date on the top of the To Do list......
(Puts the list to her face)
Four years ago......that's when this list was from! And yet all the items on the list are exactly the same! Except of course for the thank you note part without which I never would have noticed this is from FOUR YEARS AGO!
Why do I even make these lists? What is the point? It is the same chores, day after day! Week after week, month after month, and now....year after year!
(Sighs deeply, gets up to go back to her own chair.)
I'll tell you why I write a new one every day......I'm an optimist!
(The others cheer as she sits and rips up the list)
