Wah, wah! You want a day off! Wah, wah, you're so tired! Wah, wah!
Well, I just had a day off, actually two nights and night days off - paid for by my wonderful family, who encouraged me to 'get away' for a rest. I chose to stay in town because who the hell wants to travel for six hours each direction someplace just to turn around and come home! I mean, really!
Maybe when I was 25 I could be in a car or bus that long, but not anymore! That ability faded out along with the ability to remember .....well, just about anything!
(Listens)
Where did I go? To a hotel - a nice one, right by the ocean! Beautiful! I got there for early check-in - and it was like going to heaven! A big bed - that I did not have to make! Clean sheets - that I did not have to wash! - a chocolate cookie on the bed - in a wrapper so it was clean, and even if it made a mess - I do not have to clean it up!
And I took off my clothes and I lay down for just a minute......and I slept for 24 hours straight! Well, maybe only 18, and I did have to to the bathroom once - maybe I do exaggerate a bit - but I didn't get out of bed until the next morning!
Incredible! Then I had a day - just for me! I watched the stupidest TV shows, and ate room service, and when I finally left the room, I sat in a jacuzzi for two hours until I had wrinkled like a prune!
And the next day - I repeated the first day!
By the time I had to check out on Sunday, I called my family and begged to stay another night!
I refused to leave! They had to come with the police to evict me! Well, maybe that's a tiny exaggeration......but you get the idea - I wanted.....MORE!
Having a little rest was.....TERRIBLE! Because I didn't want it to end.....I wanted to stay for a week, a month.....
(Sighs heavily)\
When I was in high school, there was only thing I remembered from all my history - that there was a Russian Revolution not because the people were downtrodden - hell, they'd been that way for centuries! No, what had happened was the people had actually been treated better for awhile, things had eased - THEN - got worse again. The result - a revolution.
So, I warn you - do not encourage caregivers to get time off! Otherwise, you know what could happen?
(She shudders)
I don't even want to think about it......
(Turns to go back to her chair, stops, looks around)
But.....it was a nice couple of days.......I just want...MORE!
