Monologue Mania Day # 1181 How Caregiving Helped Create Silicon Valley by Janet S. Tiger (c) May 9, 2017

Not sure where this scene will go......

How Caregiving Helped Create Silicon Valley
(Not)  a monologue by Janet S. Tiger
                                                (c) all rights reserved (c) 2017

(Jeannie - the leader - raises an article to get everyone's attention)

JEANNIE -  I realize that some of us are aware of the importance of caregiving.....right?

          (The others react with approval)

JEANNIE -  But what I am about to share will be a revelation to all - or most of us......because it proves the universal influence of caregivers.....

          (She starts to read)

JEANNIE -  William Shockley......he got a Nobel Prize for inventing the transistor......

GEORGE -  Loved those radios!

JEANNIE -  But did you know what else he - and his mother - are responsible for?

           (The others  are puzzled)

ANN -  Beepers in the diapers when they're wet?

GEORGE -  That's terrible.....wait a minute, can you get those?

JEANNIE -  Shockley was working in Bell Labs in New Jersey, but moved to Mountain View...listen closely! .....moved to Mountain View, California, when his mother got older and could not care for herself!  And then he was working hard, full time, and keeping an eye on Mom, and he started going a tiny bit bonkers......who can identify with that?

           (the others hoot and holler)

JEANNIE -  He started yelling at them.....

KYLE -  Wow!

ANN -  So I guess I'm not the only one!

JEANNIE - And asking his employees to take lie-detector tests......  and because he drove them crazy, eight of his brains mutinied, and quit!  And they formed a company - Fairchild Semiconductor in, are you listening?  In Silicon Valley!  Over the next 20 years, they were responsible for 65 companies! Two of them started...Intel!  So if you look at this whole thing closely, caregiving - or rather, not enough support for the caregiver! - has been the driving force behind......Silicon Valley!

        (The others are stunned)

GEORGE -  And is that supposed to be....a good thing?

ANN -  You're right! Think of it, if he had a group like us, maybe......there would be no modern world!  People would still talk to each other, not just on their phones!

KYLE -  But how would all these people still be alive to be taken care of without all these great inventions that keep them going?  Didja think about that?

(The other, older folks look at each other and smile.  Lights dim)

JEANNIE -  I think that young people are too smart,

        (Blackout)
