Monologue Mania Day # 1212 You Be the Judge by Janet S. Tiger (c) June 9, 2017

(An older woman enters, she is in nicer clothing, and is nervous.  She nods)

Thank you, Judge, for letting me speak in my defense.

But the fact is....I have no defense.  I am guilty.  I sold my pills to that nice young man I met at the pharmacy.

He gave me $20.00 cash, for each pill.

I get one pill a day, for 30 days, and I only pay $4.00 for all of them.  So by selling all my pills, I received 596 dollars a month, which pays for my rent, which used to be $300 a few years ago, but is now $550, plus utilities.  (Listens)  Thank you, Judge, I always did well in my math classes.  (Listens)

You see, my social security does not pay for everything, and so I needed extra income, and this nice young man helped me these last two years.  I'm so sorry if I did something wrong, but, I really didn't know what else to do.

          (Listens)

Oh, yes, judge, I know these pills are for pain. But..... I did not lie to get them.  I am in pain every day.  But I would rather eat.

          (Listens)

I know you could send me to prison..... in some ways that might be better.  I'm glad I got caught.I hear that I would not have to pay anything for my medicine in prison.

What should you do?  I don't know.  You be the judge.

(Lights down on this problem, but not out)

Wow. Another heartbreaking tale. Stranger than fiction.
