Sure Tea
(for Book of Teas)
A monologue by Janet S. Tiger © all rights reserved 2015 tigerteam1@gmail.com
(T is talking with her granddaughter - her Southern accent strong)
Now that you've heard this story, I can understand why you are perhaps a tiny bit....perturbed. Oh, I like that word so much better than upset. Perturbed describes the sensation you have right now so much better than.....worried or concerned.....a deeper word......for what you just learned was more than upsetting or troubling.....it was a secret that means you have to rethink everything you know.
They say asteroids cause trouble, well, how many times does anyone see an asteroid land? But secrets....we live our lives on foundations made of secrets......a quicksand that moves when we least expect it to.........
(Listens, laughs)
So you are....how old now? And you are just discoverin that you cannot be sure of anythin you know? Now that is funny! The only thing you can be sure of is the fact you know absolutely nothing! And that you never know what is going to happen......Sure Tea.......I remember when I first heard of 'sure tea' when my Daddy was talkin about a surety bond.......I asked him what he meant.....and he told me some long explanation. The party of the first part guarantees the party of the second part.....and so on....although there was no party, not even a cake!
He laughed when I said that, and told me surety was just fancy talk for insurance. Of which there is none. The big secret is no secret - we don't know diddley squat - no one does. There is no insurance my dear, nothing you can depend on.....except of course, for miracles.......trouble is merely a reminder of miracles.....you can only depend on miracles.
So I share this with you.......your world is upside down.....you have to make decisions, but the reality is.....tomorrow you have no idea what is gonna happen. (Very clear) No.....eye.....deah.....!
Except for the miracles.....for when you arise, you can be sure there will be the sun, shinin......or the rain....rainin.....but the weather will be there, the sky, the earth, the flowers and trees and animals. Strange things can always happen - it's what makes this life the greatest amusement ride of all. Miracles.......All miracles.
(She turns to leave, stops, looks back)
And of these miracles, you are the greatest one, my dear granddaughter......which is why I have every faith .......you will prevail.
(Lights down, end of scene)
