Monologue Mania Day # 1720 Inaccuracies (Belva Lockwood speech) by Janet S. Tiger (c) Nov. 1, 2018

(The woman who enters stands tall and
is well dressed. She turns to the side
and nods)
Thank
you for that introduction.
I am here in Wisconsin
for two reasons - one, and this is vital!....to encourage the people of Wisconsin
to support the introduction and passage in the Congress of an amendment that
gives the right to vote to women as well as men……. but also, to address the
issue of inaccuracy.
For the record, life
has no inaccuracy - only humans do. Life has many unfairnesses – a flood
destroys your home, or children are born with terrible sicknesses, or born to families
that are impoverished. Unfair, perhaps,
but not inaccurate. A problem to correct, yes, An inaccuracy, no.
Inaccuracy is based on
false beliefs. One major inaccuracy is
that men and women do not have the same right to earn the same amount of pay
for the work they do.
This is something I
have worked against since I first came to Washington, D.C. many years ago,
helping to make sure that a law was passed insuring federal workers received
the same pay no matter what their sex.
Now, for those unaware
of who I am, I would like to introduce myself - I am Belva Ann Lockwood - the first woman lawyer to present a case before the Supreme Court,
the first woman to win a case for Native Americans in the Supreme Court, an
amount of $5,000,000 and ......the first woman to run for President - and
receive votes!
I was born on
October 24, 1830, and I am currently, in 1912, 82 years old - and I am calling
to the attention of all the error of the Milwaukee Free Press in regards to the
inaccuracy of their article where they state that I am NOT the oldest
practicing lawyer in the country. They reference a story in the Boston
Globe, and they list two male lawyers in Wisconsin who are older than I
am.
(Getting annoyed) But - if they read the Boston Globe
carefully, they will see where their error occurs. For you see, it is
true that I am not the oldest lawyer practicing in the United States - but, as
printed, I AM the oldest WOMAN lawyer practicing in the
country!
And I am also calling
into focus another inaccuracy from the Milwaukee Free Press - their paper is
NOT free! There is a charge of $3.00 per year per subscription.
(She turns to leave, stops, looks
back)
If I were a citizen of
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, I would be very afraid to trust anything printed in this
paper - because I have a sincere and deep fear....of fake news.......
(She exits into history)
(She exits into history)
-------------------------
This monologue has roots in history – this is
an article that was printed in the 1912 Milwaukee Free Press
-
And Belva was a real person - with an amazing history here
In 1984, I wrote a play -THE THIRD PARTY- about her candidacy for President in 1884 . The THIRD PARTY was produced at The Gaslamp Quarter Theater and was nominated for Best New Play by the San Diego Theater Critics Circle here
