(Monte trains a very bright light on Marci)

JUSTIN -  Hey, isn't that a little too bright?

MARCI -  I'm ok....

MONTE -  In Southern!

MARCI -  (Heavy Southern accent)  I'm just fine, honey.

MONTE -  Better.  And as for the light, this is standard.key light.  I'm not doing fill because those are for the real shoots, this is for getting used to having these in your face for hours, until you get a stand-in, but that is years away, my friends.  So for now.....smile!  And no fucking tears!  If you have issues with this brightness, we'll get you contacts with built in sunglasses!

JUSTIN -  Is that for real?

MARCI -  I think he's  .....(sees Monte's face and switches to Southern accent)  .....I do believe he is makin' a joke, darlin'

MONTE -  Better.  Now talk.  Talk to me.

MARCI -  What do you want me to say?

MONTE -  Seven words wasted!  Try again!

MARCI -  (Southern)  Well I am just so very honored to be here today!

MONTE -  Eleven words wasted!

JUSTIN -  Tell her what to do!  That's what you said you were so good at!

MONTE -  I am telling her what to do!  But she's not listening!  And neither are you!
This my friends- and I use the words in real Hollywood effect - is the essence of Hollywood!

The spotlight!  It's all the spotlight!  Where is the light pointing!
Not a me, not at you, Jughead, at her!  And every minute you are in that light you have a moment to keep it, to say something, do something, look special!, anything to keep that light on you!

Everything you say, everything you do, the focus is to be the focus - of that light.  And when I say spotlight, you do know I mean the media, right?

JUSTIN -  So talent has nothing to do with it?

MONTE -  (Laughs)  Amazing!  I thought you two knew this!  You do realize that for every job in this industry there are 1000, maybe 10,000 qualified people?  And that what separates them is not ability - but the spotlight.  and the sooner you learn that, the faster you get to the top.

But here's the thing that I want you never to forget....see this light....

       (He intensifies the spot)

For every spotlight, there is a place where no light is being shown, look around.

(He indicates the rest of the room)

Got it?  You and I, we're the background.  And that's -uh, huh, uh, huh- the way I like it.  Now, from the top, talk to me.....

(Marci sits up taller, tilts her head and smiles)

MONTE -  Better, much better.

              (end of scene)
