(A  woman comes out onstage – she can be any age from 20s through….older)

For years, I have had a dream that comes and goes – but it is essentially the same dream.   There is a house, and I know it is my house, but  the house does not look anything like any house I’ve ever lived in – it is neat, the furniture is great, and as I walk through it….(she illustrates by walking through the house)…..I am happy, but then, I see a room that I never realized was there before.

It is wonderful, and it has lots and lots of space and it will solve all my problems of where to put all the extra stuff I have.  And when I wake up, I feel fantastic!   Like I’ve slept for years!

And then it comes to me, I look around my house….where is that room?  Then I remember, it was a dream.......and in.that dream the house was someplace else!   But where?  And what did it mean that there is a secret room that I don’t even know about?

(Conspiratorally) Sometimes, even months after the dream, I walk around my house to see if there is some secret room….but no, nothing.

And so it went on for many years.  And then, recently, I started getting emails from people who have read my poetry online.  But I never put my poetry online – I only shared it with my family and friends.  Some of the emails asked if I had a book of my poetry, and I had to say, ‘no’.   But because so many had started asking, I started collecting my poems, and typing them online.   Someone told me I could scan the old ones, but I don’t know how to do that yet.

And….(hard to say)  …I started writing poetry again.   It’s been a long time, but it feels good.  And now...(she holds up a book).…I sold my first book.   And they paid for it!   I mean, it’s wasn’t a million seller, but for me, it was like…winning the lottery!

So I kept writing my poems, and a lot of things came out in them, that I had never really dealt with – and it was ......like cleaning house in a way.

And I was just writing another poem, and I realized the name had to be….The Secret Room.   And as I was writing, I realized, …. that the house..... was me – the secret room was that secret part of me that writes poetry!

It was almost the same as coming on that room .....only when I was awake, and it was full of riches and happiness because it was …..not a secret any more.

(Starts to walk off)   And since that day, I have not had that dream again.   I guess I haven’t needed it anymore.     (Almost offstage)   What’s your secret room?  (She smiles, exits, the end.)
