(Actor enters carrying a glass of juice and an orange - will use throughout)
It was a chance comment heard on a news program - someone was guarding the 'juice'.....and it was OJ Simpson they were talking about, not my orange juice.
Not surprising.
Only I care about my orange juice.
I make it every morning. With fresh oranges from a fruit stand that picks them every week from farms still alive to the north east of where I live.
Okay, some weeks there are no fresh oranges, and I have to use some that I have hoarded away in the back of the fridge. A little shriveled, not fresh anymore....kind of like I am now, as I age ....but way better than store bought or -God forbid - juice in one of those horrible bottles!
But most weeks, the oranges are fresh, and the juice is so delicious that I am reminded of when I worked one summer picking oranges, on tall tall ladders in orchards hot with the sweat pouring down my neck. With a heavy bag that held fifty pounds, and a little handheld clipper that snipped off the ripe fruit at the top......and sometimes, when I got hungry, I would take the clipper and snip off the top of an orange, still warm from the sun, and drink the juice. Nothing has ever tasted that delicious - maybe because I was hungry and thirsty, but also maybe because....it was perfect.
And now, I juice the oranges every day. For myself mostly as my children are all grown and mostly not around. Orange juice bothers my husband's stomach in the morning, so, it is all mine.
And I use a juicer that a friend gave me. She doesn't remember that she gave it to me, because....she often doesn't remember me. But she believes me, because I think she knows I am telling her the truth.
It is an older model - made in Germany I believe. And sturdy. It juices well, and has a good filter for the seeds. But I take all the pulp and eat that, too, it's all so good.
(Takes a sip, turns to leave, stops, looks back)
It tastes of .......sweetness, and of.....beautiful memories.
(Exits, drinking the juice)
