Monologue Mania
Day #916 Pencil Shavings (actress)by Janet S. Tiger (c) Aug. 16, 2016
There have been
several requests to make this for a female - here it is-
Pencil Shavings

.
(The actress enters with a pencil in hand, holds it up and examines it)
Obsolete.
They say the pencil is obsolete, but I
don't think so. I do believe I might have had this pencil longer than
some of my friends......
(Takes out a sharpener)
Very simple, You write, the pencil doesn't
work, and voila....
(Sharpens the pencil, lets the shavings fall, rubs them with her foot,
then looks at the pencil, touches the point)
Sharp. And ready for action.
No batteries needed, no charging......just some….shavings…..
(She takes out a cell phone)
You see, maybe there are other ways to
record things now....to keep track of ideas, and news and phone numbers
and...people.....
(She waves the cell phone, puts it away, and takes out a small book)
But remember the address book? It's
old fashioned, just like me, I suppose, but.....it's private. No one can
...what's the word?.....hack in....and when it comes to making sure you can
erase something...
(She opens the book, takes the pencil and rubs something)
There's nothin' like a number two pencil......for
those people who have become like.....excuse me.....for those who have
become.....number 2......
(She blows the pencil dust away, takes a deep breath, closes the book)
There. Twenty years.......gone with the wind.....
(She turns to go, stops, looks back)
And that's why I keep the names of my friends.......in pencil.....
(She takes the pencil, turns to wipe
her eyes....then breaks the pencil and drops it, exits)
