Monologue Mania Day #829 Havdalah by Janet S. Tiger (c) May 21,  2016
In the Jewish tradition, havdalah is a ceremony at the end of the Sabbath on Saturday night.

                                  Havdalah
A monologue by Janet S. Tiger  (c) 2016 all rights reserved
                                                tigerteam1@gmail.com

(This actor's costume is part of the whole effect - one half will be white, the other blue....one blue glove one white glove, one blue shoe, one white shoe, you get the idea.  The actor enters with a white glove held high, the white side pointed out to the audience)

Three stars in the sky.....time to light the candles.....

Holy.  Thou shalt revere the Sabbath and keep it holy.........This is the end of the Sabbath.....the end of the holy day........and the rest of the week approaches, the profane of the ordinary hours of the week, the regular, the mundane.....

(Slowly turning to show the blue side of the costume)

But there is one moment.......maybe a part of a moment, where the holy and the profane are together, touching.......as the holy leaves and the profane is once again our daily worries.....what TV show is on, why doesn't the Internet go faster....did he get my text......is that sale over tomorrow or Monday....all that we think about......during the rest of the week......

At the moment that the holy and the profane meet, there is an instant......of perfect balance......of acceptance that life is not one or the other....but at every minute of every day....a mix......of the holy and the profane......

The candle is lit, the blue wax and the white wax melt together.......the Sabbath is over.....until next week......I hope you had.....a Shabbat Shalom.....and that we all remember the holy throughout this busy week to come.......

(If lighting is possible, the lights should dim as the actor slowly leaves.)
