First Monday in September
A monologue by Janet S. Tiger

(The actor is waving a flag, marching through the audience, shaking hands.)
I've always supported labor! Everyone knows that! I have been behind every single law that helps the working man and woman!
But for those of you who are not aware of the monumental importance of this, the first Monday is September, for those not aware how this holiday started so many years ago, now two centuries ago! How people like you and me forced the companies and the government to realize that working folks had rights......for those who think all we have today is just an accident.....I would like to explain to you what it really means.....
(Goes to pocket to remove speech, can't find it. Starts to get upset, goes through his pockets frantically)
It means that.....there's a big holiday.....to celebrate....
(Finally gets a paper and sighs, reads)
Picking up my dry cleaning after 3pm on Wednesday.....I mean.....
(He looks again, gives up, turns to leave, stops looks back)
The first Monday in September means......no more hot dogs until Memorial Day!
(He runs off.....to find his last dog of the season. Happy Labor Day!)
