Monologue Mania Day #906 Listen by Janet S. Tiger (c) Aug. 6,  2016

Alert - Some heavy issues in this.

.

(The woman is in her fifties....she looks to the side)

I'm listening......that's one of the messages here.....the importance of listening......now....what was the question?

         (Listens)

How did we meet?  How did we get to be friends?

(She indicates the other woman on stage)

We met .....when my son killed her daughter.

There....not the usual way people get to know each other.

But.....the funny thing about suicide...and by the way, there are not a whole lot of funny things about suicide....... is that one person dies......a whole village weeps.

When my son was shooting up the gymnasium, her daughter was in class that day.....and after Jonas.....that's my son....shot several students....and Leslie.....he........... turned the gun on himself......

Sorry.....After five years, I still have trouble telling this......(deep breath)

I got involved with the local chapter of the suicide prevention team......

(She indicates the other woman on stage)

....and Amanda....Mandy was involved in the victims classes, and when I saw her one day, I apologized.

Not just for her daughter, but for not realizing how serious Jonas was......

The night before he .....did this......he had called a neighbor.....and told them what he was going to do the next day......she told her mother.....and her mother......did not believe it.

They moved away the next year.......I am still in the process of forgiveness.....of myself, my son, my neighbor......but one thing I learned through all of this.....if someone says they're gonna do something bad......listen.....In this case.....ignorance is definitely not bliss......

(She turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Either you listen then....or you spend the rest of your life wondering.....why didn't I listen?

(She hangs her head, then raises it, exits to a life of questions)
