Monologue Mania Day # 1609 Mine  by Janet S. Tiger (c) July 13, 2018

                                                   Mine
A monologue by Janet S. Tiger

(The actor comes onstage with a rapturous look, beyond happy. Points at the wings.)

They did it!  I saw them do it.....I've been dead for years, but I saw them do my play again....still....oh, this group did it not as well as I did when I first directed it......for my friends......for a crowd of cheering patrons...for the queen.....

But it holds up....the language...still....and the characters and the plot.......oh, mostly they try very hard and come close.. ....and sometimes....for a multitude of reasons - they completely and utterly destroy it!....(deep breath)....but there are times...., the times we all wait for,.....when one of them gets it right.....they make the words sing and the audience is with me.....even though I am just atoms now......I know they like it, the very lines, the poetry, the characters.....all...mine!

(Looks out at the audience and waves at them)

I can tell.....the language may be foreign....all the clothing different now......strange inventions that I can only wonder about....but at the root, the letters of the alphabet come together for a glorious moment, an hour, two.....and the actors shine in the glow.....joining all the other actors over the weeks, the years.....the centuries between when I first penned these lines.....and this very moment......

(Removes different types of writing utensils from pocket - quill, pencil, fountain pen, etc.)

This was what I used for so many years.......until the age of atoms arrived, and now words are throughout this universe, for all the other worlds to hear soon......

(Takes out a phone and shakes it)

Or maybe already!

        (Singles out one audience member)

Did you just ask who I was?  Can't you tell?  I'm only the writer....gone with the winds of time....but still here in every syllable......I am Shakespeare....and Aristophanes....I am Lorraine Hansberry.....and Chekhov and Miller and Euripes.....Kanze Motokiyo....and Goethe....and Aphra Behn and  every single Ann...Onymous.....we all live....while you watch.....and listen.....and applaud....and give standing ovations!

.......and some of you give the greatest compliment a playwright can get.....when you tell the actors....how smart they are.....to think of all these clever lines.....I hear that, and through all the time that has passed since I wrote those very words...... I smile!

Because even if I'm the only one who knows......those words will always be....MINE!

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Now if I could just figure out a way to get the royalties.......

(Exits shaking head...but as long as the plays are done.......never really gone.)
