(Actor enters. Looks around)
It's starting. I think I know the symptoms well enough. First my mother, then my father.
Same things. Little things. It's really not just forgetting.
It's like a whole palette of problems. But all the same color - shit.
Only I think I have an idea that will work, because I'll be goddamned if I let my children go through what I've gone through.
(Lifts vial from pocket)
Will I remember not to take this? Will I be able to hide it so no one else can find it and stop me?
Where do I hide it, where I will remember it, and yet, no one else will know.
In plain sight, but not dangerous to anyone else.
A mystery. A puzzle. Soon - maybe three years, or less, I won't be able to do puzzles at all. But first, I'll stop doing them. So no one will notice. That's part of it, too.
(Takes the vial and shakes it.)
What should the label read? Do not drink. Only for ink-making purposes.
That will work.
(Writes on bottle)
But will I remember to ignore what this says? Will I remember how to read......
(Shakes head, looks at label closely)
(Shakes head, looks at label closely)
Will I drink it because I have trained myself to drink from a small bottle every day before bed? Like now.
(Takes a drink and swallows)
Now I have to remember to refill it......with something that will make sure I am never a burden.
(Goes to edge of stage and leans over a walker, turns around slowly, walks back very slowly, much less stable)
I don't know if I like this hotel room. It's blue. I like cream color. And I like the third floor, not the ground. Can I get this changed? Where are you going? Are you coming back?
(Watches as 'other person' leaves)
Am I overplaying? I have to pretend a little...that I'm worse. So I can keep going according to the plan.....what is the plan? Do I remember the plan?
Time for bed.....I have to follow the list...
(Takes out a list)
What does the list say? I can't remember.....but there's a big star on the bottom.
That reminds me of something....
(Reaches into pocket, takes out vial)
There's a big star on this....but what is it?
(Opens top, sniffs)
No bad smell. Do I drink it?
(Turns to leave, puts vial to mouth. Then stops)
Wait, I remember! I think I remember.......I think I have to .......rub it on my warts.
(Sits and removes shoes, takes the bottle and pours it over feet, looks closely)
I guess it works. I don't have any warts.....
(Looks at vial)
Good thing I don't have any warts, because it's empty.
(Puts vial in pocket, exits.....slowly)
