Monologue Mania Day #  1402 Just the Tip..... by Janet S. Tiger (c) Dec.16, 2017

                                    Just the Tip
a monologue by Janet S. Tiger (c) all rights reserved 2017

(Woman walks out on stage, she's in her 50s /60s, fashionably dressed but not fancy)

I guess I just had to come out and say these things now.

I don't know how to do the hashtag thing but if I did, I would join the crowd and say... me too!

It wasn't recently of course, it was back in my  twenties.

I wasn't an actress - I wasn't even interested in being an actress.  From when I was little, I loved materials, how they looked, what they felt like, I loved making costumes for all the kids in the neighborhood!

So when I grew up, I was interested in designing costumes. I wasn't even that interested in dating then - although my mother tried to fix me up all the time.  But I didn't have time for that.

I was working on my first musical.  (Remembering)  It was so exciting!  All the people, and every one of them were going to be wearing a costume that I made!

And one day, I was standing with the director looking at the stage from the wings because in a musical it's really important that the costumes can dance ...I mean that the actors can dance in them, but it's also important  what they look like from the front and is important because they have to be comfortable and yet still look like a person would wear them on the street.

(She takes a deep breath, remembering the next is more difficult)

So, I'm standing there next to the director who was in his fifties and he liked a lot of the young actresses because of course they were very pretty. And then all of a sudden..... there is a hand.....his hand .....and it is on my back..... underneath my shirt..... and this...hand..... is moving around....

And then it moves down and it is actually touching..... my buttocks! I was so stunned I wasn't even sure what to do! It was so ........stunning! (Pulls herself together)  Anyhow.... I pulled away from him and said I see something I have to do over there and I walked away still shaking a little. And in that moment I knew..... I never wanted a man to touch me  like that ever again.

Although it took me another 3 years to come out I think that was that moment that forced me to realize who I was perhaps the only good thing that came out of that awful moment!

(She pulls herself together, puts her shoulders back)

Why have I added my name to the list?  It's funny, I was never going to say anything.  I mean, this happened years ago....decades ago!  But then, when Pamela Anderson said actresses should know what they're getting into when they go to a man's hotel room at 11 at night I was amazed. What happened to me happened again and every time, it happened in public places - with many people around!

Sometimes I wondered - should I have screamed? In those days that would have just made me look bad like when Bette Midler talked about Geraldo drugging her and groping her and she said in 1991 to Barbara Walters..... maybe I shouldn't talk about this I don't want to get in trouble.  Check it out - those are her exact words - and Bette is no shrinking violet!

So....I think that's what this is all about. We should not be the ones who 'get in trouble' when someone else finds us so attractive that they have to put their hands on us!

Now I am not going to bore you with the other details of when people grabbed me but none of them were in hotel rooms at 11 at night! They were all in public places - restaurants  -movie theaters and sets.   Because it was always in public, I just made an excuse to walk away - I had to go to the bathroom a lot!

But I have just made a decision -if anyone ever touches me again, I do know what I'm going to do -I'm going to scream bloody murder!

(Turns to leave stops looks back)

Because this may be just the tip of the iceberg ...but it's time some of these guys go down with the ship!

(She leaves - but standing much taller)
