              (Actor comes onstage)

I understand.....

I understand you are tired......

I understand you are upset......

That's what you have taught me, my dear doctor.  (Imitating)  'When people are getting hostile, tell them....I understand.'  Simple.

It works, too.  I've tried it.  My mother was ragging on me about something totally inconsequential, like why I don't visit, which is, of course, one of the reasons I don't visit, and I listened and said....I understand.

It was amazing.  It was as if I'd shot her with a cannon.  She then started to sputter,'How can you possibly understand how I feel?  I'm 81!'

Then I said, 'I understand you are feeling mad that I don't come to visit.'

And that shut her up.  She hasn't complained at all for weeks.

Then I tried it on my son when he was yelling at me that I had to get more involved with the computer.

I told him,'I understand you are frustrated with me and it must be hard for you to have an old fudd-duddy for a parent'

He laughed, and then he showed me how to find some amazing videos about cats.

(Amazed)  Understand......What a mystical word!

It has powers to defeat the biggest enemies!  I just wonder why the leaders of the world do not use it to have world peace!  Maybe I will write them an email....

            (Listens)

Oh, all right, time's up.  I will see you next week.....

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

And the funny thing is, now that I'm older...I don't understand anything at all!

            (Exits, laughing.  I understand why)

The funny thing is - I understand less now than when I first wrote it!
