(Late 50s, this man is dressed for success, but something may be a bit ragged - his collar is open, his tie is loose?)
(Hangs head as he exits)
Sure. Sure.
That's what I remember you telling me when I first started here. I can still hear your voice- what was that, 30 years ago?
I was...younger. You were still young.
Sure.
You told me very clearly what this job entailed.
Remember what you said? (Imitates) Millions. Millions of dollars. And you are the man responsible.
(Points at his own chest)
Just remember to be sure about what you do.
Because if you're wrong, it will surely be your head rolling down the carpet in this room!
The $200 a square yard in those days carpet in this room.
Now of course it's wood, how much does this cost? I should know, I approved that budget when they redecorated..... because we must keep up with the times, mustn't we?
Sure.
Am I sure anymore about anything?
I woke up this morning and I was sure of one thing. I'm not sure anymore about anything.
I guess that's what happens when .....your son takes a gun and shoots a bunch of people....
Your son who was...doing great.....with a family.....and a new job......
Your only son......
And the phone rings, early because your son lives on the East Coast.....and I guess he was up early.....
And even though I'm used to getting up at 5 am every day to watch this infernal market....this market
that will not shut down, even when my life is gone.....this market that keeps ticking, like a money watch that
you have to watch ....that never stops, just slows to a crawl on the weekend, when the latest Ponzi
scheme called bitcoin keeps ticking...... Sure I'm fine, why would you ask?
Sure.....
(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)
Does it matter if my head rolls now? See, it's already off....
