Monologue Mania Day # 391 by Janet S. Tiger   March 10 , 2015
This is modified from a piece first done in 1996
                                          Soul Mats

(This piece can be done with one actor - or two.  This version has one, but I will be putting a second version together soon.  The actor comes out, dressed in  whatever clothing fits but must have boxing gloves if possible, and a rope to delineate a boxing ring.  The person stands, a boxer's stance)

We square off.....eyes blazing...
Souls afire with hurts....
Real and imagine.

(The actor dances around the ring)

We punch....and kick.....and jab....and dance and feint and.....

        (They fall onto the mat)

And faint.....

(Jumps up and goes to grab the opponent)

Then we go into a bear hug
Unable to land a punch
While our arms are around each other

       (Pulls away, looks around)

And with no referee
We are stuck sometimes
In this eternal match.....

How do we break the pattern?

It's as if there is a set agenda of dates
For these fights
And we cannot pull from the pull
Of family scripts
That write us into the drama
Of the wedding ring

(They take a piece of the rope and wrap it around a finger, too big)

And yet...
We suspect there are ways out
That the rope surrounding us

(Takes the piece of rope and puts it around the neck)

Finishes just outside our gaze
That we are not doomed
To be always in this haze
Of fighting words
And days where no one speaks

To break loose
From the script
From the bands - but not the bonds
That is the trick
That no one teaches in magicians' school
Becasue it is an eternal search
One soul looking for another
Like the electrons in hydrogen and oxygen
Needing the heat of passion
To make the life-saving water....

So we work on it
Our souls clashing and falling to the mats

(Falls to the floor, can't get up, then slowly gets to knees, bloody, but not beaten)

Then rising to see new answers

Because sometimes you have to be down real low.....

(Drops to the floor and leaps up)

Before you can see how high you can really go.....

(Takes off gloves and exits.  Never the end of the fight between the sexes)
