Monologue Mania Day #1055 by Janet S. Tiger (c) Jan. 2, 2017
                                           Expiration Date
                                    A monologue by
©Janet S. Tiger all rights reserved

(An older woman enters, dressed in black, one hand holding a bag and some flowers.  She is looking around, trying to see every part of her body, including using a mirror on her back)

Jean, I just can't find it!  Where is it?

(She pulls out the bag, starts examining  the contents)

It was so easier years ago, things were simpler....I have absolute proof - look at these old coupons!

           (Holds them up)

You remember Jean, don't you?  They all expire at the end of a month.....most on June 30th or at the end of the year, which is Dec. 31st.  So on January 1st, they are USELESS!  Remember when we used to call each other on Dec. 31st and cry about what was going to happen?

See......

(Starts going through the coupons, looking for the date)

Here, Dec. 31st, Dec. 31, Dec. 31.....that means today, on Jan. 1, they are....obsolete, unusable, without any value...NO GOOD!........except in a few strange stores that accept old coupons, but those stores rarely have the items for these coupons to be good for!

So there you have it, January 1st rolls around and what do you have....the end of an era, the end of not only the year.....but ALL THESE COUPONS!

And then I got to wondering......

(She pulls a mirror out of the bag, starts examining herself with it....arms, legs)

What about me?  What if......

(She tries to look at her rear end)

What if had an expiration date!

             (She shudders)

The thought is horrifying, but almost a relief, what if you knew when you were going to be useless, when your life was going to be over, when there is no breath left in your body?

It would be an almost freeing experience, the chance to really know what was important, who was important in your life, because, after the expiration date, there is just nothing at all.

            (She puts the flowers down)

I guess I just am sorry that you didn't make it to this new year, my friend, that you hit your expiration date too soon......

(She exits - goodbye to my dear friends who did not make it to this new year, and a Happy, Healthy New Year to all my friends who have)
