        (No pretense - it's me!)

A special night it is, the night before a baby is born.  Twenty-three years ago was one of those nights for me.

My daughter Irene was about to make her entrance - of course I didn't know for sure she was Irene yet, I wanted it to be a surprise, but in my heart, I suspected that the baby was a girl.

And she was!  And she is!  Twenty-three years in the blink of an eye, a wrinkle in the fabric of time and I speak today with the wonderful lady, Shirley, who came to help that day, who - when I opened the door for her all those years ago -looked at me and said that I was certainly - 'huffin' and puffin' and she - although she had four of her own - was only there to watch my son, not to deliver my baby!

So it began.....with laughter and love.  Shirley is now in her 80s, and we will see her next week - because we are all still friends, and it started on that amazing day of Irene's birth.

So many things started that day - Irene was incredible, a baby who loved to laugh to the point her brother made it his business to get her giggling, then truly laughter involved.  A child who loved to learn, which has kept on through today.  A person with her own sense of style and a fierce desire to do her own hair (because I was woefully incapable) and a deep urge to make her own decisions, which I know will stand her in good stead throughout her life.

And through it all, a perseverance that is remarkable - intelligent, talented, a beautiful soul that is kind and capable and makes all around her proud - and happy to know her.

Like so many other great stories, it has its highs and lows, laughter and tears, but the amazing thing is, the beauty of Irene has always been able to shine through, may it always, my beautiful girl! Oops, young woman......

(I turn to leave, stop, look back)

Happy Birthday - and many more!

(I leave to get the real birthday present!  Hugs from all, Irene, have a wonderful day- and year!)
