(Actor enters with a letter, looks down)
I'm sorry I couldn't come sooner, but I had to wait until when everyone left.
(Opens the letter, takes a deep breath, reads)
This.....this that was never meant to be....
Started like a summer rain.....
Slow.....slow enough that the first drops were barely noticed
Until suddenly there was a steadiness
And the pace picked up
And a downpour is upon us
Caught in the rushing
Our moment brightened by the lightning
Frightened by the thunder
How many seconds away is it?
We count together
Ten.....then a bolt is only two away...
And then we are in the lightning's flash
Combined with the sound
It is like the beginning of time
But it signaled the end
For this was never meant to be
And it wasn't....except for a brief flash of a moment....
Except in memory
And in these words.....
(Takes the letter and throws it into the audience, nods, exits)

I start my day by reading Janet Tiger's latest monologue. Out loud. I always read them out loud. This is one I would like to perform on stage. Pure poetry.
Pure poetry indeed! Beautiful.
