(Actor enters, sidling out)
I'm .....almost afraid to say this.....but I'm...I'm scared.
Not about the things that might scare others....that do scare others! I'm not afraid of an asteroid hitting the earth, or global warming.....or even Godzilla! No, my brothers and sisters may have screamed at those movies....about monsters in the dark ...but not me! I really didn't worry about stuff like that.....it was a movie! Just a book!
(Listens)
So what frightens me, what makes me wet my pants in fear? Okay, not wet my pants....well maybe if I'm close to......the deadline.
(Looks at watch)
Almost here. Midnight. Have to have the copy in by midnight....otherwise....no column. The presses roll! And I.....I don't get paid! Two hundred fifty words. That's all....how scary could that be?
You be the judge....here's what I have.....
(Takes a page out of a pocket, shows it to audience)
You see it - it's got....zero words! So.....zero pay.
Now that's scary!
(Turns to leave, hears something, looks back)
Oh, no, this isn't my first column.....I've been doing this ten years!
(Stops and smiles)
Gotta go......
(starts to dictate into phone)
Column number three thousand six hundred fifty one......title....Scared!
(Exits happy......)
