(from pg. 23 - (.... a voice is heard approaching and FRANKLIN returns, almost dances into the room)

CLARK -  Speaking of things that never change!

FRANKLIN Im so glad youre all still here!  I know everyone is dying to hear what tonights
song will be...

        (The others hoot)
MATTIE  - Oh, no!
             FLORENCE - Not another one!
                           GEMMA  -Dont say dying!

FRANKLIN (Ignores them) And tonight's song is—one that I learned many years ago...

(He directs a great deal of this to Savannah)

FRANKLIN - ....as a young boy,  I would hear my father sing it to my mother.  They had met onstage in a vaudeville revue....when he was the replacement singer for a fellow who had just discovered the joys...and troubles!...of alcohol.  Over the years, he would relive the moment when he used the song to propose to her, and she would flutter about......and join him after the first verse.....later, when she..got older, he would sing to her, and, even though she couldn't remember who he was....she could still remember the words.....so, tonight, I dedicate this song...  surprisingly enough.....  in honor of my dear wife........Who I have been married to for over 35 years, of which, she has remembered me for 32..and who is taken care of lovingly by those who sometimes do not arrive on time…….

(He taps the cane and the others are quiet)

FRANKLIN (Singing)
(Some of the others join in as they recognize the song, but only for the first paragraph)

Let me call you "Sweetheart," I'm in love with you.
Let me hear you whisper that you love me too.
Keep the love-light glowing in your eyes so true.
Let me call you "Sweetheart," I'm in love with you.

FRANKLIN (singing alone) -

                Let me call you sweetheart
'Cause you can't recall your name
And even though you can't remember
I know you're not to blame

I'll keep the night light glowing
so you won't fall and break your hip
            Let me call you sweetheart
but please honey..... Do Not Trip!

(The others groan and make catcalls, and at this he breaks into an old soft shoe)

JEANNIE - Thank you, Franklin, for another cheery tune!
