                                         (Not really)        A monologue by
                                                    by Janet S. Tiger

(Two older men, sitting on a bench, or at a table, but they are sitting, playing checkers, or cards, but playing)

TONY -  You know what I just read today?

BILL -  No, and I don't care.

TONY -  I'm reading about this smart guy, Steven Hawking, and he is talking about what's going to happen in the future!

BILL -  I know what's gonna happen in the future.....we're all gonna die.

TONY -  Yeah!  That's just what this guy says....that in like five billion years, all the stars are gonna fizzle out and they're gonna get swallowed by these giant black holes and there will be nothin' left for ....forever and forever and it will be emptiness and nothingness......NOTHING!

BILL -  Sounds good to me...

          (Tony shakes his head)

BILL -  Look, are you sure about this?

TONY -  Yeah, I read it ......

(Pulls out a book and opens to a section)

TONY -  ...right here!  Look, it says......in six billion years.....

BILL -  Wait a minute!  I thought you said FIVE billion years!  Which is it?

TONY -  I guess it's six....

BILL -  Well, that changes everything, doesn't it?

TONY -  (Thinks)  Yeah, I guess we got time for another game......

(Lights dim, but don't go out yet on this friendship)
