          (The writer enters....holding a book lovingly......yes, it's me again)

Okay, quick.  What's the reason people do art?  Fast, without thinking!  When you think, you start to lose touch with the truth underneath all these words!

You have to feel it.....it's visceral, intrinsic to humans....no animal does art......but why?  It's easy.  (Sighs)  Death.

Not that everyone over the age of one doesn't know about death - we all do.  But artists try to to avoid death with their art....because our art lives on...... when we are gone....there, a tiny poem.  Is that art?  Will you remember me for it?

Maybe not.....but if the sculpture lasts, if the painting cheats the fires and floods of the centuries....if the song is still sung.......the artist lives.

Yet the one who most wants that immortality is ......the writer.  Why else would writers deal with so much death?

Because the fact is, we writers are a strange bunch......the musician prepares the song and another person can sing it.....the artist draws and we see through their eyes....but the words....that is different.....the person needs to inhabit our words in order to understand what we tried to say.

To see the painting, only eyes needed, the song, ears......the sculpture, perhaps hands and eyes.....but the words on the page...ah, that needs a  language, it requires knowledge, it demands you know how to read....how to understand what flows through our veins.......the thoughts, the love and hate.....the time we describe in a bottle......the very soul of the universe......

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

By the way, for those of you looking confused, tonight's topic was IMMORTALITY.....if you were here for the talk on IMMORALITY, that's tomorrow.............

(The writer exits looking for a better last line)
