(The writer comes out, yes, me again!)
Although I write a blog every day, Richard Lederer's column today about books got me thinking about the other side of writing.
I have loved reading books since my wonderful grandmother taught me to read when I was in kindergarten.
From that point, I read anything and everything! Books and magazines that abounded in my house, every street sign and back of cereal box - you name it, I read it.
In school, my mother told me if I was bored, I should read, so..... I read at least a book a day - sometimes more- all the way through college! Since I could keep up with classwork, most teachers did not complain. And the books I read have lasted me throughout my life- if I listed my favorites, the computer just might run out of space!
After my husband's stroke six years ago, his vision has been impaired. My sister recommended the Library of Congress book reader - a fantastic service provided free of charge by the Braille Institute that allows my husband to audio/read books daily. And which has allowed him to read books he never had before - some of which I suggested, and we can now discuss. Another blessing of literature!
But my greatest gift came from my children - I had homeschooled them through the San Diego City Schools (Mt. Everest Academy - where they heard Mr. Lederer speak and he bought a book from my son!) and when they told me how they loved to read, I knew my job had been done. Because once you can read, the world is yours - you can go anywhere, learn anything, accomplish everything.
So, Mr. Lederer, thank you for inspiring me to think about these gifts. Your gift to the world is in your words - may you be well and keep writing!
