Monologue Mania Day # 1654 Mad by Janet S. Tiger (c) Aug. 27, 2018

                                      Mad

(Set has table, with chair next to it.  There is a box of assorted items on the table.  Actor comes out, sits down, starts poking at cell phone, then starts to dictate)

(Dictating)  First of all, I want to say that I am not mad at anything right now.  I am calm.

         (Looks around at the box)

And it's important to know and understand that I am in complete control of my faculties with no pharmaceuticals whatsoever involved....

(Stops and looks at the box)

I am not imagining the noise.  It is coming from this box.  I hear it.  .....

Right now.....I heard the noise....

And...today I just had my hearing checked.  Perfect.  Maybe too perfect!  I asked them if I was above normal and they said 'no' that I was within all the parameters.....

(Stops and really looks at the box)

So where is that noise coming from?  It sounds like a bug is inside the box.....but I took everything out and examined it and nothing!

Do you hear it?

(Holds the box up to the audience)

No?  Well, right now, neither do I!  But when I put it down....

          (Puts the box down, listens)

There it is!  The noise!

It is a complete mystery!  I think about it, dream about it!  Get my hearing tested every day!  I have to go many miles to find a place that hasn't tested my hearing yet....but it's worth it just to prove I'm not hearing things.....You see, this noise is more than just a noise....it is.....special! (Very happy now) And even though it takes up a lot of time and energy...yes it does!....But I realize that this noise is a revelation - when I figure out what the noise is.....I will have solved ALL the mysteries in the universe!

        (Listens)

How long?  Oh, it's about five years now......

        (Listens)

What?  (Horrified)  Burn the box and its contents!

What kind of doctor are you?  You must be the crazy one!

(Grabs the box and turns to leave, stops looks back)

Don't you understand?  The box is my friend!

(Exits with box - to a noisy world)
