                                                                Callbacks

(The actress is pacing, worried, stops and looks out at the audience)

I'm sorry, is this pacing bothering you?  I know waiting for the doctor is always ....what's a good word?  Worrisome?  Annoying?  Tiring?  I know....what about...HELL!

           (Covers mouth, shocked)

Please forgive me, I had no idea how that slipped out....well, I do, but you know what I mean.  This is the first time I've ever had to wait in one of these offices for......something about me.  I mean, waiting for your parents reports is not pleasant, and, thank God, I've never had to wait to hear anything too bad about my children, but ...me?  I'm never sick!  I can't afford to be!

Maybe this is just a bad dream.......

           (She pinches her arm)

Okay, maybe not.

Whew, it's funny, well, maybe not funny, but I'm an actress......

          (Listens)

Yes, that's why I look familiar.......

          (Listens)

Yes, it was a stupid show but I was great in it.......but before I got that part, I had to go to auditions, and I had to worry if I got the part, and if I was going to pay the rent that month......and sometimes, they had callbacks, more than one for a role was like a nightmare that you dream night after night and it continues......but this....

         (She indicates the office)

This is not the type of callback you want to get........the one after they look at your mammogram....

          (She shudders)

Unsure......indefinite.....need another view......callback.......

          (She stops suddenly)

Was that my name?

(She takes a deep breath, turns to leave, stops, looks back)

I hope.....I don't get this part........

(She exits to hear about the future)

Thanks, Sue, glad the results were good!

Been there. Glad I didn't ever get that part. Yet.
