Monologue Mania Day #993 What's in a Number? by Janet S. Tiger (c) Nov. 1, 2016

Numbers are funny. I have always loved numbers, since I was little. They are fascinating, and I think about them all the time.
Why do some numbers have importance? Like the number 1.....we are all 1. The number zero - an amazing discovery - the absence of numbers, but a number. A paradox - the only geometric shape that is one shape as a number. (One does not count because it is a line - not a shape, but the foundation of all shapes.) Zero is a circle, everything comes back to zero - the circle of life. We start with nothing, return to nothing. But nothing is lost, it stays in the circle!
Other numbers do not hold the attention as much....two or six for example. But the big numbers, those we grasp like lifelines! A million dollars, a billion dollars....one thousand. 1000. A zero is nothing, but when it holds a place, it is worth....so much more!
1000. I am only one week away from 1000 monologues. Why is 993 monologues not as important? It is a number divisible by 3 and 3 is a great number, but the inherent issue - not enough zeroes!
Why is the number 1000 so important to me? Because I never thought I'd get to one hundred - 100. And now, I almost have ...another zero! 10 times 10 times 10.
Ten cubed. Ten to the third. What a number! Plus, 10x10x10 has three ones, so now I have not only more zeroes, but more ones, too.....(yes, there is that play on words, as well)
Why the numbers game?
Because even though I love numbers, I love people more.
And people are the ones who read my work, and I want people to be happy when they finish, to retain something that makes it worth their while to read my words.....so that when they finish reading or hearing my words, that they can get a smile, or a tear, or a thought....something that stays with them for a moment....or maybe longer.
That changes that moment - or that hour, or day.....or the ultimate goal....that life.
I think of Shakespeare, dead for centuries, affecting this planet still, all with some bits of ink and a quill pen and some paper. Even the title here tips my hat to Shakespeare - what's in a number?
The wars of his time are over, the horses and the swords and cannons and even the generals are mostly forgotten. Do we really remember which battles were fought in his day? Yet his words move us still.....and so it is that I were, too, able to do this. \
Time will tell. Who knows if my work will be around in 10 years, 100 years, 1000 years. But if it is -what a payoff- and maybe.....who knows.....with a little luck, the ultimate in numbers...infinity!
