(Actor is jumpy, with a telescope pointed out towards the universe)

(Very upbeat)  Wow!  Do you know that we are seeing light from the sun that took 100,000 years to make!  Wow....double wow!  We are looking at photons that were first made during the last ice age!  And you think it takes a long time to talk to someone at At&T!

(Puts down the telescope and peers at the audience)

Think about this when you're waiting for that 'representative' to answer your question......(Laughs) But the great thing.....after that 100,000 years of the photons bouncing around inside the sun......once they get to the surface...BAM!  They are here is just a few minutes!    And those teeny tiny photons arrive and they get right to work - to make everything grow....to make things live......to make us smile!.........(Not so lighthearted)  So.....What would it be like if the sun stopped shining!  I mean, just plain stopped!  And there was no more light coming......do you know what that would mean?

I mean, really know?

            (Looks at watch)

Eight minutes....and 20 seconds to be exact, is how long it takes for the light to get here.....but I've already been talking for at least a minute or two, so let's call it.... 6 minutes left.....and then darkness.....complete and utter darkness........Ok.....perhaps there would be a few batteries left and they would last for a moment......but......think about it.....what would you do in that last few minutes?  Would you call up everyone you knew and tell them you loved them?  would you call up people you hated and scream? ...... Would you hang up on AT &T?

Come on.....tick tock!  What type of activity would fill your last minutes of light......would you pray?  Or look up at the sky?  Would you make love?  Or hug your children?  Or eat some chocolate?  Or anything you could put your hands on?  What if you couldn't see.....would you care?

And what if you were on the side of the world that was already dark?

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Gotta go......

           (Looks at watch, smiles)

Only three minutes left......doncha know.......hafta phone home.....

(Exits......but luckily not with all the light!)
