BARRY - I'm glad you called....
ELLEN - But the night is young....
BARRY - (Smiles) I think, maybe I like having to be on my toes with you....
ELLEN - We'll see about that, too......
(He shakes his head, looks around)
BARRY - It doesn't seem to be a long wait....
ELLEN - It better not be......I don't have that much extra time.....
BARRY - I think I'll ignore some of your comments that remind me of how awful it must be for you....doomed to die in a few months, and yet somehow able to focus on snappy comebacks.....and just ask a normal question.....do you have food preferences? I mean, are you vegetarian? or,..vegan?
ELLEN - God forbid! No, I like food......with a little luck, I'll be able to eat until the end.....
BARRY - May I ask what you have?
ELLEN - Of course you may.
(There is silence and he shakes his head again)
BARRY - All right.....what illness do you have?
ELLEN - I'd rather not discuss it just yet......
BARRY - But you said....
ELLEN - I told you you may ask....I never promised to answer..... and I prefer not to discuss it further.....it tends to be a buzz - kill, especially in bed.
BARRY - We're not in bed...
ELLEN - But we will be....after dinner and possible a stroll, some light necking and fumbling, and then you can get right down to business.....
BARRY - Look, I like you, which I why I'm glad you called......but making love is something that is not assured, my friend....
ELLEN - What is it with this friend stuff? We're not friends yet!
BARRY - But you're ready to make love....
ELLEN - Not that! Just sex......
BARRY - Well, I realize you like to be in control.....because perhaps, you don't have a lot of control of other things, but.....in this department, I prefer to take the lead.
ELLEN - In this department......and that would be ...the romance department? Next to cookbooks and two rows behind historical coffee table books? The ones with Hitler and the Civil War and pictures of airplanes and tanks?
BARRY - Look, I get it....you're smart, and hurt, but to start.....let's.....just talk.....because,..... I think that's what you prefer doing......
ELLEN - An unusual man who refuses a sure thing....
BARRY - (Talks over her) And I think you prefer it because if all you wanted was a procession of one night stands, you would be going to bars and sitting there, and when guys came up to talk to you, you would smile and that would it be it....no talking necessary.
ELLEN - You think you know me so well.....
BARRY - No, I don't, but I want to......remember when we met?
ELLEN - You mean, two nights ago? It has been awhile....
BARRY - And I told you about that SUV that almost smashed into me? Well, I was pretty shook up, and I pulled over...I mean, I was literally shaking in my seat..........and I wondered, maybe it was some kind of sign, not to come to that meeting.....and then I decided that, no, as a scientist, I didn't believe that. And as a Jew, I certainly didn't believe that God was out to tell me something ......the guy who hit me was probably drunk, and God had nothing to do with that. Probably if God was involved, he wouldn't have had the guy drinking at all....so.....I came to the meeting, and ......we met......and now, we have our first date. Which will either go down in flames.....
ELLEN - Go down ...now there's an interesting way to end the evening.....
BARRY - Or we will look back at this and remember it when we talk about....how we met.....
ELLEN - Aren't you the philosopher!
BARRY - No, just a marine biologist......35 years......same company.....I look out the same window at a beautiful ocean.......what do you do, I mean when you're not dying?
ELLEN - Do you always talk to women this way?
BARRY - (Laughs) Actually, no....you bring out the worst in me....
ELLEN - Good.....I think I like that.....
BARRY - You didn't answer the question - I've noticed you're pretty good at that.
ELLEN - What do I do......well, my degree was in English.....and I have been in and out of that field most of my life....editing, publishing.....I could edit at home when my daughter was young.....when she went to college, I found a small publishing company that needed me......they still do.....so I live my life in books.....through other's adventures, correcting their grammar and spelling and wishing I had gone around the world in a sailboat or climbed up Kilimanjaro.......
(She looks off as if seeing these adventures, then sighs)
ELLEN - Now THAT was a buzzkill....
BARRY - Why?
(She looks at him as if he were crazy)
BARRY - I mean, why haven't you gone on these.....weekend trips?
ELLEN - (Laughs) Money for my earlier years, and now...lack of proximity to medical attention....
BARRY - Sounds like a poker playing horse....you know about them?
ELLEN - They must be friends of yours.....
BARRY - One farmer comes to another and asks to borrow a horse to plow his lower 40.....the farmer tells him no, he has to play poker with his horse. The other farmer says, "Do you expect me to believe you play poker with your horse?' And the farmer says...'I don't care what you believe, when it comes to excuses, one's just as good as another.'
ELLEN - How deep! And with the horse reference, I mean that literally......
BARRY - You know lady, you're a big talker, and I like that.....in the first few minutes we spoke you insulted me a dozen times, but I knew....I could tell, there was more to you than just a big mouth.....and now, tonight, you proposition me before we've even finished our drinks.....well, you want a proposition...here's one.....let's forget about this first date.....call it a night, grab a burger and just drive off someplace....do something neither of us has done before.....start a trip that you always wanted to do but never had the time for.....I've got a brand new credit card.....and months of vacation time.....and you.....you have.....no excuses left.....
(He stands up, reaches out his hand to her as the lights dim. |Blackout- end of scene)
