Monologue Mania Day # 1653 Untitled by Janet S. Tiger (c) Aug. 26, 2018

                       Untitled
                      (from scene 1)
                                           by Janet S. Tiger

(During the first moments when the house lights begin to dim, we hear sounds of a fight - one boy threatening, the other boy begging for his life.  As the noises fade, we see a man enter, he has a clipboard and is smiling)

Your son beat up my son.

Now, in another time and place, your son would be laughing and telling his friends what happened, and you might even be laughing with your buddies about how your boy is a chip off the old block.

But that was then - and maybe, that was you, thirty years ago......

Now, times are different.

We have a different attitude about stuff like this - more politically correct perhaps, or maybe just.....more surveillance cameras.

Did your son mention that the school just had these cameras installed?  In the locker room areas where your son beat the crap out of my son?

I imagine your son doesn't think about stuff like that.

Or how it will look, to an attorney, to a judge and jury.....to the newspapers......when  the latest technology will reveal your boy telling my boy - and the world - how he is going to 'kill'.....

I guess it's lucky I got my son some self-defense classes.  And how to take a punch......and speak clearly.......because your fellow looks like he's....mean.....and dangerous.....maybe even worthy of jail time.

Now you, sir, are in a unique position.

You can teach your son a whole bunch of very useful lessons right now.  You can teach him about standing up and taking responsibility for his actions.  You can teach him about the legal system and how it will treat him when he is convicted - as an adult of 18 - for attempted murder. - and the punishment is 5-9 years in state prison.

        (Holds up clipboard)

Or you can sign these papers  which will mean I give up all rights to sue you in civil court....... in exchange for us not discussing this with the press any more.....and.....you writing me a check for $250,000.

        (Smiles and nods)

Yes it does seem like a bit much for a boy's fight.

But.....
I know you have the money.  Your business is a good one, and you have a house.  Estimated net worth of over 1 million dollars.

If  we win......that could all be gone.

        (Listens)

Yes, you could always go bankrupt.

But then again, do you want your friends and family ....and your customers.....hearing and seeing the details of this?  Do you really think your customers want to have your son helping them after the court case reveals what he has done?  The public isn't so fond of bullies.

And your son, would he prefer you lose the civil case - which I will pursue for over 10 million dollars?-  Would your son really enjoy emerging from prison with no rich daddy to help him anymore?  Maybe you would win the civil case - but the legal fees will be large - for you.  Not for me.  My brother is an attorney.

(Holds up the clipboard and waves it)

So the question really is....how much of a gambler are you?

Your choice -

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Which is way more than what your son gave my son......

       (Exits.  End of scene 1)
