Monologue Mania Day #144   by Janet S. Tiger The Glue of Loneliness  (c) July 6, 2014
Today is 144- twelve dozen monologues!  Almost halfway through the year.....

                               The Glue of Loneliness
(for Donut Shop play, possibly last monologue)

(At this point in the play, all the characters are onstage in various degrees of argument, eating, sitting, talking, when the pixie-like character from the opening comes back onstage, smiling, indicates the others)

What a microcosm of life!  Food, fighting, friendship, insanity!  All in one area, like a painting of humanity!

                  (Waves hands, the tableau freezes.)

And they are all drawn together by a force that is possibly the strongest in all the world - stronger than the bonds of atoms, stronger than the sun's rays, stronger than.....

(As this character speaks, the others slowly release from their frozen state.  The character turns to them, horrified)

You are not supposed to move until I say my big line!

(One of the people gives the finger and the rest laugh.  The character gets mad and waves hands wildly)

Freeze I told you!  Freeze!

                (One of the people stands)

Burt -  Most of these people are old and in a little while, they will be permanently frozen, so leave them alone!

(The others cheer and continue their conversations, but the character now snaps fingers and we can't hear them)

That's better!  Where was I?  It's so hard to have a Shakespearian moment with all these morons blithering on.....I was just saying that they are all here because of ......(big)  ......the glue of loneliness!

                (The others hear and nod)

There, I said it, and everyone knows it's true.  We are all here alone, together, and that's what attracts us to places like this.  Our inherent aloneness.........we are tiny, and the world is big, but together.....together.......we are bigger than any one of us.

And that is the message for today, my friends.

(The character's shoulders now slump, and they start to walk off, all alone, until, as one, the others stand and go over to the character.  One reaches out a hand, and in it, is a donut.  The donut of friendship.  The character is touched, then smiles.)

Thank you, but right now, I'm gluten free......

(The others laugh and they offer coffee, and as the lights dim, the character is drawn into the Donut Shop Circle.  Then they all raise their hands, all with donuts, into a final spot that looks like....a donut.  The end, but wait, there is no end...... to a round donut!)
