(Jimmy's mother walks onstage, she is in pain. She looks at in the distance. She leans over, to speak with someone we don't see)
It
looks like a nice place. I like that
tree, it’s a strong tree. Go, Jody, take a
look around the back, I think I saw a big yard…..
(She watches,
taking a deep sigh. then looks up)
I’ll
be very old before he’s grown up, did you think of that when you let my Jimmy
go?
(She turns, as if she feels someone is watching her.)
Well,
God, I guess I have another tree now…..is this what you wanted for me?
(Listens)
Okay,
somehow you’ll make it work. He’s going
to be a handful, that boy, I can see it.
But, maybe…with your help, we’ll both learn.
Solitary. One tree.
One person, one life…..we touch others for just a minute, and then we
go. Like the breeze through the leaves
of this tree.
(She turns, puts her hand to an ear)
Jimmy, is that you? I can almost see you. I
must be getting very old……(Laughs) Do you think it was wise to leave an almost teenager with a woman who talks to God - and dead people.
(She pauses to listen again)
It’s
funny, I almost thought I heard you say……’you can do it, Mom’
(She looks at Jimmy as if she sees
him, then shakes her head and turns)
(Calling out) Come
on Jody, time to look inside. I think we
have just enough to get this place, maybe ....if you eat all your vegetables!......you’ll even have a chance to work for
the neighbors, so you could get a horse of your own……that would be a good
thing…..
(She suddenly looks back at where Jimmy could be.)
I
love you.
(She touches her heart and she
exits. Lights fade to blackout. The end.)
