(The older man comes onstage with a newspaper, happily waving it at the crowd.)

I love to read....especially the newspaper.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Internet, too.

The Internet is today, right now – sometimes you even hear about things BEFORE they happen – like those flash mobs.

Of  course I remember when flashing meant something completely different, but that dates me, which, by the way,  is the only date I get these days!

I was a newspaper boy.  Those are gone, too.  The victim of…victims.  In my day, a kid could ride around on his bike any hour, no problems.  I was a paper boy from age 7 until my first real job at the gas station.

We got the paper for free – that was one of the perks.  And the newspaper was bigger then.  Not color, just larger.  Now the paper is smaller and my waist is bigger.  Go figure.

And the way they do the news – well, I guess that had to change, too.  TV and online is up-to-date, so the papers have to give us some background – why did things happen?

And now I have the time to read the paper sitting down, in the sun, not standing up on a subway – squashed between masses of sweating humanity.

I love the cartoons, and of course,  sports....., but….now …….(he imitates a drum roll)  for my favorite part of the newspaper – the obituaries!

I check to see whether or not I’m in it.  If I’m not, that’s usually good news.

(sighs) You can always tell when you've gotten older, you start reading the obituaries.  I started back in my forties.....you notice things like people who died who are as old as your parents....then someone who is just a few years older than you are......and then, horror of horrors!.....someone who is exactly the same age!

(Not laughing as much)  And then you see you went to the same school together......a very long time ago.....

(Holds the paper up, looks at the picture)

And then.....you..... look at the picture.......if it's from years ago, that's nice, that means the family understood the person was still young inside, no matter what tricks the body had played........but often the picture is of the older person.....and all the older photos look alike......just like all the baby pictures.....generic....

.....the same....generic....until you notice the name.........not one you recall.....so it's ok, until you connect the dots......the name is the married name.....further in the paragraphs is......the woman's maiden name i........the one you knew her by....when you were young...when you loved her..  when you loved for the first time.......almost forgotten in the mists of the years.....but now it's all back......she had a full life after you......she left behind children and grandchildren by another man....the man who stole her from you....the man you thought ....../was a friend.....

(He turns to leave, stops, rips up the paper, looks back)

Maybe I'll just stick with the comics........

(Exits.......to try and find a new section)

(Big Grandma is lying on a hospital bed, attached to tubes for breathing, eating, etc. Ly enters, very upset.)

LY -  BG!  Are you Ok?  They told me when you heard about the fire, you fainted!

BG -  Fell down, hit head.  Everybody worry for nothing.  In Vietnam people faint alla time. No big deal.

LY -  But the doctor said it was your heart!

BG -  What he worry about?  Not his problem. Medicare pay him no matter what.

LY - No jokes now, I'm worried about you!

BG - Should worry....(hard to say) .....I no want to live.....

LY -  But you'll be ok!  I want you to get well!  I love you!

BG -  I know.....but problem bigger...

LY -  What else could it be?

(BG is quiet, Ly pats her hair)

LY - Please.....tell me....I'll do anything I can!  If you want, I can bring you your favorite slippers....or that stuff you chew....whatever you want!

BG -  Cannot bring me what I want.....burn in fire....

LY -  Everything can be fixed!  The insurance will pay!

BG -  Not everything....not....

LY -  What?  What?

BG -  No more elephant ear seed......

LY -  Elephant ear seed?  I thought you had some at the house!

BG -  Plant last ones, ready to take seeds put away for next crop, bad boys come and ride over with stupid bicycle and skateboard!  I run outside and chase away, but figure, plenty at bakery, get later, but then forget.....forget lot of things now.....

LY -  You don't forget anything!  You're so smart!  And I know we need the seeds to make the special flavor but we can order some....

BG -  Not really need seeds for flavor....make good story, but sometimes I forget seeds...... no one know.....

LY -  (Amazed)  You don't need the seeds?

BG - Never did....

LY -  But the flavor is...

BG -  People like taste, make up reason so others no copy...work good.....

LY -  (Smiling) So, it's another lie?

BG -  Not bad lie - some lies good, not hurt anyone, help business.

LY - (Figuring it out)  But....if you don't need the elephant seeds for the flavor, then why not just pretend you have them.....

BG -  That too big lie!  Need elephant seeds!

LY -  But here....

(She holds up her phone and shows a page)

LY  - You can buy them online!

(BG strains to look, throws hands in air)

BG -  Not from Vietnam!  They from bad place!

LY -  Croatia is not a bad place!

BG - Not Vietnam!

LY -  But.....

(She looks at BG and realizes the argument is useless, then understands something)

LY -  That's not the real reason, is it?

BG - Of course not!  Real reason is......seeds not ones we bring with us.....seeds last thing connect us to home.....

LY -  But now.....your home is here.

BG -  No....home is always....here....

          (She touches her heart.  Blackout.)

(Big Grandma is watching her daughter, claps hands together)

BG - Time for no more lies.  Time to tell her end of story on boat.  Can't wait until too much time, I be dead and no one else will know truth.

LY -  What story grandma?  What is she talking about?

(Kim is quiet, then comes forward and waves her hand.  The outline of the boat slowly appears throughout the next)

KIM -  The lady who is beautiful on the ship.....the one who die, she is not a stranger to me....she was...my best friend.

LY -  (Amazed)  You knew her?

KIM -  We were girls together in Saigon.  Become friends in school, grow up together, she work in bakery, we make cookies....we giggle like girls do..... our husbands were friends, too, we meet them during war......war horrible, but always exciting, never know what going to happen next.  Like living in fast movie, only....real.

But then Saigon fall, we get separated, she on one farm, we end up on another farm, but when we escape, we on same boat!  Miracle!  We gonna start life together in new country!  Great things!  Only good.....(she has to hold herself together)...then pirates.....never understand how American like pirate so much......

(She turns away and Ly goes to her, puts a hand on her arm)

LY - I got it grandma, to lose a friend, a best friend.....it's gotta hurt worse than a stranger dying.....

BG - Not end of story......go on!

KIM -  I lie when I say friend beautiful because she have no babies.....she did have baby.....on the boat, we talk about how our babies going to grow up free....in America.......but .....boat not easy on babies......babies get sick......boat take babies away.....

(She cries, but pulls herself together, turns to Ly)

KIM -  Take away my babies....my two babies......

LY -  (Can't believe it)  Oh, my God!

KIM -  Take away my best friend......but not her baby.....I keep her baby because my babies die......her baby...was your mother.....

(Ly is stunned, pulls away, looks at BG and Kim)

LY -  (Horrified)  What are you telling me?  That my mother was.....

BG - She shoulda told you before.....you look like just like your grandma...beautiful just like her....

LY -  So we're....we're just.....what?  You're not my grandmother?  You're not my big grandma?

BG -  Course I am!  I always be!  Blood just red, love is all color, love you like my blood......always...
(to Kim)  This is why lies bad!  Not good to wait to tell truth!  Truth is like cookies!  Bake too long, get too crispy, not good flavor - people don't like old truth......

LY -  Why didn't you tell me....(thinks)....did my mother know?

KIM -  She die before I could tell her......so I guess she know now.....what the difference?

LY -  What's the difference?  What's the difference?  I mean....why didn't you tell?

KIM -  (Getting annoyed) Who we tell?  People in camp in Philippines?  Say your mother is orphan? Have her adopted by strangers?  I lose two babies.......one of my babies was a girl so ....I have papers for baby girl.......your mother..... become that baby....much easier......safer......how could I give up my friend baby to stranger?  You tell me!

LY -  Okay, I got that....but it was....how many years?  Forty?  In forty years you couldn't tell...anyone?

KIM -  Your mother and father were killed when you were a baby, I thought there was a curse or something.....who I tell then?  Government?  Say, oh, this baby not my granddaughter?  Have them take you away, go to stranger?

LY -  (Very angry)  Maybe it would have better than all the lies!

(BG slaps Ly and she jumps back)

BG - Never say that!  Your grandma bring you up, you know she love you!  I love you!

(BG turns to Kim and slaps her)

BG -  And you, told you not to wait so long to tell truth!  One of you say too much, other say not enough......nobody perfect......just like all family!

(She takes both hands and slaps herself)

BG -  Now everyone even, stop fighting!

(In spite of herself, Ly laughs and Kim too, they huddle together laughing as lights dim.  There is a faraway sound of a fire engine as a red light is seen in the sky.  End of scene)

(Person enters, sees there are chairs in a row, with spaces between, sits down in one of                the chairs, hears music, jumps up walks around, sits suddenly...one chair is taken                        away.  Music heard again, person not so happy, gets up scurrying, weaving in between                  the chairs, sits quickly.....another chair gone, now only three chairs.  Person looks                        around very angry, listens, music starts, person refuses to stand)

I am not leaving.  I will not give up my spot!  I have been waiting for weeks for this appointment with this specialist and I refuse to give up my spot just because someone else has an emergency!  Ask another patient!  I am not playing!  I want my moment with Dr. Fishkin!

              (Listens)

What?  Of course my appointment is today.  Today is Tuesday, and the appointment is at 11am because my appointment on Wednesday is at 2pm with Dr. Dingle for my feet....and Dr. Whizzer my urologist is on Friday at 9 am, and and I am here 10 minutes early, and I did not want to play musical doctors!

             (Listens)

The appointment is on ...Thursday?.....at 11 am......so I am here 48 hours and 10 minutes early....whose fault was that?   I have the card right here!

(Takes out the appointment card and looks at it)

Thursday.....I guess I must have....read it wrong........well, that's changes everything....I guess....I have to come back .......

(Starts to exit, then stops, takes out the card  and squints at it, brightens)

I remember - today I'm supposed to be at the eye doctor!

(Turns around and grabs a chair)

Just in case......

(Drags the chair off....do we hear an 'I'll be back'? as exits to another appointment)

A monologue by Janet S. Tiger   © all rights reserved                                                      tigerteam1@gmail.com

(A woman comes onstage.  She is beautifully dressed, and has a perfect manicure, perfect expensive purse.  She is walking confidently, then sees someone and is startled, but recovers quickly.)

Oh, hello!  How are you?  I didn't know you walked in this park.  It is lovely, isn't it?

           (Listens, nods)

Oh, no, what happened between you and my son is between you and my son!  After all, the fact that you had an affair with his best friend since kindergarten, well, that just showed maybe he had a need for a different best friend!

          (Tilts her head, puzzled)

Of course, you actually having intercourse with Todd at the engagement party, that was a little different, but a threesome with Todd's sister?  Now that was the material of People magazine stories!  I'm still looking for an article!

(Starts to walk, following the person)

And please don't worry, my son is completely over his depression!  After the suicide attempt, he received some excellent medical care!  And because he cut his wrists in the bathtub, there were no permanent stains!  It was a win-win situation!

(Starts to walk faster, then even jog)

And isn't is amazing how things work out for the best?  I mean, the abortion, and all......those DNA tests are so expensive!   Oh, don't go, I want to hear all about your life, too!

(She stops, almost offstage, looks back.)

And I didn't even have time to properly thank her!

(She opens her purse, removes a gun, looks at it and smiles.)

Well, maybe next time!

(She exits.  Maybe the end ....of the ex-fiancee...)

TREVOR - Hi....I'm here to pick up Ly.....

BG - Ly not here....I tell her you come.....

TREVOR - My name is Trevor....

BG-  Trey vanh.....I know, she talk about you....

TREVOR -  (Happy) Really?

BG-  Say you father in Navy....

TREVOR -  That's right......he was in thirty-five years.....and his dad before him....

BG -  Good for them.....I tell her you come....

(She goes to close door, he won't leave)

TREVOR -  If it's ok, can I please wait inside......

         (She looks at him)

BG - She not home for while....

TREVOR - I don't mind waiting, I'll be quiet, just sit here on the couch.....I can wait....

(She sizes him up, looks outside, nods)

BG -  Okay......you wait here......

(She goes out towards the kitchen)

BG - I get you something to eat.....boy always like cookies....

TREVOR -  It's okay, you don't have to go to any trouble for me....

BG - No trouble, you can pay for cookies.....

TREVOR -  uh.....

BG -  I make joke, no pay for cookies in house, you guest, guest no pay ......

(He looks around while he waits, goes to couch when he sees her coming)

TREVOR -  Thank you.

BG - Here some boba, too.....you big boy, need lotta food to keep going.

TREVOR -  Thank you....

BG - You welcome.

(He takes the cookies and drink.  What happens next will have two conversations - the one between the two of them that they both hear, while we hear their thoughts on the side)

TREVOR -  (To the audience)  That was a joke.  At least, I'm pretty sure it was.....Should I offer to pay?  I wish I could speak their langugage.... (to BG)  These are my favorite.....

BG -  (To Trevor) I know.  I see you at bakery.  (To audience)  He eat lotta cookies, sell lotta cookies, Not bad boy, just big.  Ly is so little, two of them funny looking couple.  But I see lotta that....why don't he learn Vietnamese, much easier for everyone.....

TREVOR -  So, did you learn to bake in Vietnam, before the war?

BG -  Yeah, my mother and father have three bakeries in Saigon......I start in kitchen when I was baby....

(She now pantomimes learning to bake, Trevor watches and nods, then stands, talks to the audience)

TREVOR -  I wish my father wasn't such a bigot....I think he'd like Ly's family.  I don't know how I'm gonna convince him what nice people they are.  He was just a kid when he was there, and it was a bad time, and my grandfather hates Japanese people.....I mean I understand why they hate, but this is now, and Ly is....she's so beautiful.  Sometimes, when I see her, I get dizzy. The first time I ever saw her, was when I transferred here, and I sat next to her in math class, and she was so bad at algebra, but no matter what, she wouldn't cheat.

I saw the other girls, and they would be friendly with guys, just to look at the test, but not Ly.  So I offered to help tutor her, and at first, she said no, but she was failing, and I told her we couldwork at the library....and she said...(he glows remembering)....yes....

BG -  You like story?  You like story or you just like story because it about cookies?

TREVOR - (Back to reality)  Yes...I mean, yes, I like the story, and I like cookies.....

BG -  (She knows the answer but asks anyhow)  What you do with all the cookies you buy?  If you eat, you be fat, and you not fat.....

TREVOR -  Well, I know a lot of older people in this neighborhood because I used to work at the market, but then I figured I could deliver cookies.....and other things people need......and make a little money.....

(He explains using his hands, walking around, showing how he got the business to grow.  Big Grandma listens and nods, but turns to the audience)

BG -  I know whole story,  Not understand most of words he says......but I know whole story.  Same story in every language.  He like Ly, and no matter what they think, it not gonna be easy.  Maybe he good boy, marry her, do right.....hard to know......young people think love is just for them, for their time, that love will solve all problem.....not listen to wisdom of older ones......

TREVOR - And everyone loves your cookies!

(She hears him and turns and nods, smiles.  They hear a key in the door and Ly enters.  When they see each other there is an instant connection, then Ly lowers her eyes)

LY -  Oh, I didn't realize how late it was!

TREVOR -  It's ok, I was just talking with your grandmother.....

(Ly and Trevor whisper together about studying and BG watches them as lights dim)

BG - (To audience)  I knew it....I know whole story......

(She shudders and shakes head as lights dim.  End of scene)

(The chicken enters - the actor can go as feathery as they want! - with an attitude, flapping wings and clucking wildly)

Bwuock!  Bwuock!  Can everyone hear me?  No more ads for chicken sitters!  I am letting everyone know that we of the chicken persuasion are violently opposed to this whole chicken sitter thing!  We are old enough to take care of ourselves... and our chicks!

It's bad enough all the (mocking)  'Why did the chicken cross the road' jokes, and let's not get me started about the Colonel, but chicken sitters?  What are we....babies?

(Puts wings behind back and struts)

We live in modern times!  We have video cameras and specially designed barns - forget the barbed wire crap, no fox can get in here, and if one does, we have our not-so -concealed weapons!

(Pats a pocket to  indicate something is there!)

So get off our backs ...................or we won't get on our nests!  The next step is an egg strike, so watch it humans, you are hereby given notice - no more chicken sitters!  Take down that ad...NOW!

(The chicken exits flapping some more, stops, sees something on the ground and pecks at it)

Mmmmm, not bad.  Maybe if the sitter brings along some good snacks, we might change our minds.....

(Continues pecking for dinner ....not eggsactly what you might eggspect, but I gotta try everything once on this blog!)

This was inspired by the postings on Nextdoor - it got a lot of interest and comments- and I just loved the title!
