Monologue Mania Day # 1208 Winner! (for Caregivers Anonymous) by Janet S. Tiger (c) June 5, 2017

From an episode of the show a few months later

                                                        Winner!
                                               (for Caregivers Anonymous)

(Jeannie stands and raises a Monopoly game board over her head)

JEANNIE -  I think it's time for a game of our own brand of Monopoly -  Monopoly of Pain!

       (The crowd oohs and aahs!

VALERIE -  What kind of a game is this supposed to be?

JEANNIE -  Oh, you'll love it!  Especially because we have a few more people tonight.....George maybe you explain....

GEORGE -  Well, the goal of our monopoly is simple.....the person with the most houses of pain wins, and if someone gets four houses, they get a hotel!  Now, tonight, I don't think I'm gonna win, because I got just one house.....but there were days....

       (Ann touches his shoulder)

ANN - I remember......

GEORGE -  Now, my girl  Lena, I miss her, but I have help round the clock, so I even get to play some golf now, go visit the grandkids.....everyone is healthy today, thank you Jesus.....

ANN -  Amen!

GEORGE -  But you got two houses, now, Ann, don't you?

ANN -  Mama passed, but her sister is still  kicking, so it's not so bad, just one....

KYLE -  I got two.....my great grandpa.....and me......

        (The others laugh at him)

KYLE -  Wait a minute!  I am 18 and I never had a girlfriend yet....I mean, not  a real one, ya know!
All of you have, and been married, and had a life.....so, don't I get a house for that?

JEANNIE -  I think he does!  And even one more......what about your mother?

KYLE -  Well, she's ok, but yeah, I worry about her.  She works too much and she does get awful skinny sometimes when she doesn't eat meals.....so, yeah, three for me!  Yeah!

ANN -  What about you, Valerie?  You have plenty on your plate....or your board!

VALERIE -  It doesn't seem like this is a game I want to win!

(The others laugh at this and a woman stands who has not been seen before, the others all point and clap for her)

GEORGE -  Now, this woman, she has won this game a lot!

ANN -  Oh, Ruth, how are you?

RUTH -  Well, first, I got two parents to care for.....and both have memory loss.....and they live across town.....

          (Nods to George)

RUTH -  And I have no help...

GEORGE -  Two houses right to start!

RUTH -  And you honey....

         (She goes over to Valerie)

RUTH -  Your husband is in a wheelchair, but does he smoke?  With COPD? That's what my baby does!  and a few months ago, he almost burned down OUR  house!  So......does that count extra?

JEANNIE -  You didn't mention your son with mental problems.....so we're up to four for you....Ruth

GEORGE -  That's a hotel right there!

RUTH -  Just the foundation!  But wait, there's more.....

(She is quiet, and the others stop laughing)

RUTH -  Two weeks ago, my son in Colorado.........(takes a deep breath)  commits suicide.....smashes his brand new Corvette into a brick wall......not wearing a seat belt either.....

(The others give condolences, she waves them away)

RUTH -  Wait for the rest!.....I said he commits suicide, yes, he's dead, and then, a brand new EMT sees a faint pulse in the carotid, and they work on him for an hour......and he's......kind of alive.......in a coma.....medically induced,,,,,and his  liver is destroyed, and he needs a new one, but me and my sick husband cannot donate parts of ours, too sick!  So he is on the list....but........because he tried to commit suicide, they may not give him the liver.......until he wakes up and says the whole thing was a stunt gone wrong......he meant to jump out in time......that's why he wasn't wearing the seat belt.....and there was no suicide note (sighs)  at least that's what the attorney said to say......so......catch-22 - no wake up, no chance for liver, no liver, no wake up.......and when he wakes up, is there brain damage?

          (Turns to Valerie)

RUTH -  At least can your husband speak?  That's a plus sometimes........So, where do I stand....

JEANNIE -  Looks like not one, but two hotels....so we have....

OTHERS ALL TOGETHER-  The Winner!

(She takes a bow.  Valerie is stunned)

VALERIE -  I thought you guys were crazy before, but what THE HELL kind of winning is that supposed to be?

RUTH -  This is the only place I can tell my tale of woe and win something!  And that's good for everything, honey!

(She turns to go back to her seat, stops, looks back)

RUTH - Especially because....I have the suicide note he wrote.......

(Teenage girl enters, swimming motion with her arms)

Some days, it feels as if I'm just swimming through acid.

I want to hurt myself, I want to feel pain, I want others to hurt me, to feel pain.

I live for pain.  I feel like the acid is eating away at me, at my body, at my soul.  How can I keep up like this?  I hate the meds I take, I hate the doctors, and the hospital.  And most of all, I hate this swimming.  Will I ever get to shore?

       (Looks at the audience)

Am I still in the nightmare?

Is this the end?  Or the beginning?  Oops. gotta go......

      (Swims off, looks back)

A shark has to keep moving or it dies......in the acid.

      (She exits into the dark)

Monologue Mania Day # 1206 Rest in Peas by Janet S. Tiger (c) June 3, 2017

                                       Rest in Peas (c)

(A man enters in dark clothing, holding a metal can, which he lifts up)

Peas.  I wish you all peas and quiet!

That's what my mother used to say when she made a toast.  Always a strange toast, but my mother loved to make people laugh.....and she believed in peas.

She would tell me that....peas would solve the problems of the world.  As I got older, I asked her if she meant, 'peace' and she would laugh.  'How can there be peace with so many crazy people!'  She would explain that in any pot of food, you could fix any mistake with a can of peas.....or two cans if the mistake was a large pot.

My father would shake his head and just look at his food.  My mother would pick up the can of peas and shake it - 'and if someone is not quiet, just hit them with the can!  Peas and quiet!  Simple!

When she was very ill, and the priest had been called for, we came into the hospital room and it was not the happiest of occasions.... my mother was not really conscious.  Then, all of a sudden, Father O'Halloran entered, and he was a bit nervous, holding a bag.

My mother rallied when she saw him...'Did you bring it?'  He nodded and she beckoned him closer......'give it to me'....and he took a can of peas from the bag and handed it to her.  She looked at it and smiled....'Bury me with this can!  I want to...rest in peas!'

And when everyone laughed, she leaned back, smiling and she died.

We tried not to laugh, but we couldn't stop.  The nurses came in and looked to see what was going on, and when they heard my mother had passed, they were horrified, but when they saw the can, and heard....they started laughing, too.

Today is the anniversary of the passing of my mother - and I wish for her what she always wanted for the whole world....

(He turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Peas and quiet....

Monologue Mania Day # 1205 Loud! (for Caregivers Anonymous) by Janet S. Tiger (c) June 2, 2017

                                                       LOUD!
a monologue by Janet S. Tiger
                                                (c) all rights reserved (c) 2017

(Actor is heard yelling, enters loudly)

(very loud)  HELLO!  HELLO!  I NEVER THOUGHT I'D BE ABLE TO COME TONIGHT, IT TOOK FOREVER TO GET DADDY TO SLEEP!

         (Listens, quiets a bit)

Sorry, I forget how loud I get, but my father will not get hearing aids!  And after a day, it just gets SO'S I DON'T NOTICE ANYMORE....

          (Listens, nods)

Oops!  I guess it's just a bad habit......I tried taking him to the VA for hearings, but we had to wait for hours, and HE JUST HATES WAITING!!

(Deep breath)  I've been doing yoga.....no need to talk in yoga!  And I figure that it helps my voice calm down a bit......

          (Waves hands)

Ooh, maybe it DOESN'T fix it, but at least I try.....Loud.  My father always lived his life loud.....he loved to sing loud, it was embarrassing when I was kid!   And he always talked too loud when he came to school, to see the teacher.  That was horrifying!  Now.....he can barely speak, but since he can't hear, I HAVE TO TALK LOUD!.....Funny, I always have tried to be quiet.  Now, I have to yell for him to hear me.....and it is spreading into my whole life......the other day, I yelled at my boss......then I pretended it was because of my father, but.....it wasn't!  I knew I was loud.....I did it....on purpose.......and I got what I wanted, extra time off to take care of my fahter....., and my next yell will be for a raise......

      (Smiles, nods)

Sometimes when I'm shouting, I see him smile, like he's happy I'm yelling, like maybe, finally,  I'm waking up ......that's when I think of Dylan Thomas, that's who he named me after......
(very loud)  Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light!

(Turns to go to a seat, stops, looks back)

Okay, NOW I'll be quiet.

        (The others laugh, lights down)

Monologue Mania Day # 1204 I Forgot by Janet S. Tiger (c) June 1, 2017

                                                        I Forgot
a monologue by Janet S. Tiger
                                                (c) all rights reserved (c) 2017

(Actress enters, she is deep in thought)

I know I'm forgetting something.  What is it?

           (Thinks, remembers)

My daughter remembers something I told her from 15 years ago - something I said that was mean, that I knew was awful as soon as it left my lips.  If I could have sucked those words in, I would have, but no, they are stuck in her mind.

          (Shakes head)

That's not what I forgot.  What I want to remember, I can't, but what I told my daughter fifteen years ago.....THAT I can't forget ......(sighs) These are the things I remember!  Things I would rather forget.......I think, I had to go someplace......but...so hazy......now my husband said something mean to me last week - and I cannot forgive or forget yet, so I bring it up whenever I am mad at him.

Today when I brought up his words - which, in a few months, he will not remember - I thought, I sound like my daughter! She brings up what upset her from years ago, and I bring up what upset me from before......how amazing!  ........(Truly puzzled)..... I wonder where she got it from......

(She turns to leave, stops, looks at her watch)

I remember!  I forgot to take my memory test!
