(The actor is a bit....agitated, wringing hands)

For all you following my column, I say thank you again for your devotion.  It has been an amazing 10 years, one column a day in this newspaper, and I appreciate all the good wishes.

Today's column is televised because....well, it's a special column.

As you know, I have had one follower who was with me throughout this ten years.  This person wrote to me after day 1, telling me how much my words moved them, and over the years, noticed and made wise remarks about my words, even noting how I had a signature - no one else had noticed that!  Even when the column looked as if it was done, the follower noticed I always made a comment indicating there would be more, and they were happy there was more!  How I loved listening to those notes!  This person was always complimentary.....telling me how much they loved my work.....and how they hoped I would continue with my prose ....forever!

Well, I have tried.  My best!  And my follower followed faithfully......year in, year out.  Through marriage and divorces, births and deaths and hospital stays!  And then.....

         (Eye starts twitching, head shaking)

Just a few short weeks ago, my faithful follower sent me a note that said.....

(Takes out paper from pocket and reads)

'Are you sure you haven't been repeating yourself?'

         (Deep breath)

Repeating myself.  (Getting angry)  Repeating myself!!!!  I work very hard to give a BRAND NEW column EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Oh, yes, it was tempting to pull an old column back - especially around the holidays when it gets busy.....but I never did!  Okay, I changed a little and called it new, but, outside of a VERY FEW DAYS, each column was new.

Or so I thought.  But once the seeds of doubt are sown.......I found that where I loved writing my column, suddenly, I couldn't sleep until I checked to see if what I had just written was a mimicry of an earlier post.

At first, it looked as if the complaint was unjustified, then, as I started to worry more, I noticed similarities......samenesses of construction, verbiage....even whole sentences that were very close......even....dare I say it?  Identical!  they were all the same!  the same!

Now I couldn't sleep at all!  I worried all day about the column!  What could I possibly write that was new!  Even Shakespeare died before anyone could complain his plays all sounded alike!

What was going to happen to me!  I couldn't continue to write.....I began a steady decline until yesterday, when the idea hit me.....for a brand new column that I knew I had never written before!

So I contacted my follower, the one who had so well sown those seeds of doubt that had blossomed into weeds of despair!  And we met, and took a hike up a mountain path I have often walked to get inspiration......

          (Remembering, walking, smiling)

And when we reached the summit, I pointed at the bottom of the mountain......

         (Points down)

'Is that....a body down there?'

         (Leans to look)

And then......

(Makes a pushing motion with arms)

I pushed my follower off the hill!

(Laughing wildly)  And now there was a body at the bottom of the hill!

And this is my column for today!  And I add that.....I will turn to leave, but then I stop and look back to tell you.....

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

There is no doubt this was an original column because..... I can guarantee - this is the first time I killed a reader!

(Exits to a lovely padded room)

For those concerned about this writer, please note, it's only 3+ years, I have no intention of murdering anyone (no matter what they think of my work!) - and best of all - I plan to keep writing ....forever!

Monologue Mania Day # 1181 How Caregiving Helped Create Silicon Valley by Janet S. Tiger (c) May 9, 2017

Not sure where this scene will go......

How Caregiving Helped Create Silicon Valley
(Not)  a monologue by Janet S. Tiger

(Jeannie - the leader - raises an article to get everyone's attention)

JEANNIE -  I realize that some of us are aware of the importance of caregiving.....right?

          (The others react with approval)

JEANNIE -  But what I am about to share will be a revelation to all - or most of us......because it proves the universal influence of caregivers.....

          (She starts to read)

JEANNIE -  William Shockley......he got a Nobel Prize for inventing the transistor......

GEORGE -  Loved those radios!

JEANNIE -  But did you know what else he - and his mother - are responsible for?

           (The others  are puzzled)

ANN -  Beepers in the diapers when they're wet?

GEORGE -  That's terrible.....wait a minute, can you get those?

JEANNIE -  Shockley was working in Bell Labs in New Jersey, but moved to Mountain View...listen closely! .....moved to Mountain View, California, when his mother got older and could not care for herself!  And then he was working hard, full time, and keeping an eye on Mom, and he started going a tiny bit bonkers......who can identify with that?

           (the others hoot and holler)

JEANNIE -  He started yelling at them.....

KYLE -  Wow!

ANN -  So I guess I'm not the only one!

JEANNIE - And asking his employees to take lie-detector tests......  and because he drove them crazy, eight of his brains mutinied, and quit!  And they formed a company - Fairchild Semiconductor in, are you listening?  In Silicon Valley!  Over the next 20 years, they were responsible for 65 companies! Two of them started...Intel!  So if you look at this whole thing closely, caregiving - or rather, not enough support for the caregiver! - has been the driving force behind......Silicon Valley!

        (The others are stunned)

GEORGE -  And is that supposed to be....a good thing?

ANN -  You're right! Think of it, if he had a group like us, maybe......there would be no modern world!  People would still talk to each other, not just on their phones!

KYLE -  But how would all these people still be alive to be taken care of without all these great inventions that keep them going?  Didja think about that?

(The other, older folks look at each other and smile.  Lights dim)

JEANNIE -  I think that young people are too smart,

        (Blackout)

Monologue Mania Day # 1180 And Have it, Too.... by Janet S. Tiger (c) May 8, 2017

                                      And Have it, Too....
a monologue by Janet S. Tiger
                                                (c) all rights reserved (c) 2017

(A woman in her 50s enters, carrying a bag, from which she lifts a cake box.)

We were brought together like the nursery rhyme......Jack Sprat would eat no fat, his wife would could eat no lean, and so betwixt the two of them - they licked the platter clean!

(She sits and opens the box with reverence, taking her finger and scraping some icing off the top.  She looks around)

My friend Cindy pretends to complain when I do that, but then I eat the rest of the frosting and leave the cake for her!

That she does NOT complain about......wow, that's a lot of frosting under the bridge!

(Laughs, remembering)  We met at camp when we were six, and we were in different cabins, but when we had cake, her cabin would laugh at her because she would leave the frosting over, and my cabin would laugh because I would leave over the cake......

It became a running joke between us - somehow, we bonded over ...cake!   So we would meet, every few years, since we lived in different cities, and we always tried to meet at a place with good dessert!  And we would laugh .....and then we found a place - the name was actually...Let Them Eat Cake!... with the most wonderful artistic desserts, and we started going back there, and after our...oh, umpteenth time, the owner came over and told us ...the cake was on the house!

Well, we've decided when we get too old to travel, we are going to send each other the remains.....I'll send her the cake....and she'll send me the frosting......

Consistency - that's why we liked each other.  We may have been odd, but we were very dependably odd - she still likes the cake, and I like the frosting.......

(She takes her finger and another big swipe of the frosting, smiling and licking her lips)

Mmmmmm!  Still delicious!  And there are no twists tonight - no strange stories with odd endings, finding out we were secretly separated at birth ....or we started a cake company...... or that our husbands had been having an affair....no, this story is just about two friends....... but it is more than just friendship, it is .......about the cake....and the frosting.....

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Because you can have it......you can have your frosting.....and eat it, too -
(She exits to a world of balance - but hopefully never the end of cake!)

(Franklin - older - stands, the group quiets as he waves hands)

FRANKLIN - Please!  No more applause!

       (The others laugh and clap)
FRANKLIN - That's better.  It's nice to hear some hands clapping just for me.  You know why?

(No one answers and cups his hand to ear)

FRANKLIN - You know why?

       (They shout, 'Why?')

FRANKLIN - Because......I came to an amazing conclusion today, or maybe, that's the wrong word, maybe the word is...

JEANNIE - Discovery?

ANN-   Realization?

FRANKLIN -  Epiphany!   Anyhow, I am positive about very little, but this, I am definitely positive about.....I am never, ever, in my life, going to be President.

GEORGE-   Maybe you'd be a better President....

ANN-  Don't see how you could be much worse than what we have!

          (Franklin  waves hand dismissing this)

FRANKLIN - I'm sure I could be a better President, but that's not saying much...., the issue is not the quality, but the opportunity, which is now, barring some type of odd situation where I got a genetic transplant and billions of dollars and won an election....it's.not gonna happen.

(The others pretend to be disappointed)

JEANNIE -  Well....here's another revelation.....I'm never gonna be....Miss America.....

        (The others roar)

GEMMA-  I'm never going to win an Oscar!

FRANKLIN - Or get a  Pulitzer.........or go to the moon....I don't care if Elon Musk gives me a free ride, I ain't going!......I'm never gonna find a cure for cancer....or invent a new kind of toilet paper.....on all of these things.....It's just not gonna be me.....

Now, when I was a bit younger.....

         (The others hoot)

FRANKLIN - Okay, when I was young.....I guess I figured anything is possible.

GEORGE -  I know just what you mean.....you could wake up and decide...hey, I'm gonna climb Mt. Everest!  And you believe it could be true......

FRANKLIN - ....or you see someone who takes your breath away, and you figure...you got a shot, that anything is possible.....(sighs deeply)  but now, I look at the movie stars and I know.....if they're going to be on the red carpet and want a date.....it's not gonna be me!

And it won't be me having dinner with the Pope

JEANNIE - or the Queen ...

GEMMA -.......or....Elvis!

FRANKLIN - Those ships have sailed and I'm not on them..... It's not gonna be.....me......

But....when my sweetheart needs help in the morning to put on socks.....

GEORGE - When my Lena needs help with tying her shoes.....

GEMMA - Or when the baby has to go to the doctor

FRANKLIN -.....or figure out which pills to take.....well, that is gonna be .....

They all say together - ME........

(They cheer and applaud, lights down)

Monologue Mania Day # 1178 Closing Night by Janet S. Tiger (c) May 6, 2017

On the closing night of Caregivers Anonymous first run Apr30-May 6 - with much appreciation to The San Diego Foundation for funding this, for Playwrights Project producing, for Trish directing - for an amazing cast and crew (see here - CaregiversAnon.org) and for all caregivers!

(The playwright comes out onstage, yes it's me - can't put anything over on this audience!)

There is something about the last night of a show.

All the excitement of the first night is replaced by the events in between, but last night has a moment of sadness mixed in - no matter what we say, how we'll stay in touch - and many of us do! - but there's a good chance that we might not work with some of these folks again.  Or they may move....or move on to a better place.

So we hug, and have a party, and drink champagne - or soda! - and we sign things, exchange our favorite stories as the curtain goes up on the end.

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

In some ways though, it's not the end....it is the beginning of....a memory

(For everyone involved in this first stage of CAREGIVERS ANONYMOUS - SDF, PWP, family, friends, cast and crew- and the audiences who helped us learn what works- a very heartfelt thank you!)
