(The actor enters with a flourish)

Thank you!  Thank you...for that lovely introduction!  Yes, that is me you are adoring!

Words cannot capture how I feel right now because you are on your feet!  Screaming!  Yelling!  Stomping!

I bask in your adoration!  I am awash in your flood of affection!

           (Smile fades)

Well, actually not.  You don't really love me, do you?  Not the person who is afraid to speak in public without a few drinks.  Not the person who yells at the kids if they wake me up before noon to play with them.....You don't care about the human who mistreats everyone around because  you all love the me that is......I can barely say the words.....You are loving the part of me...better known as....

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Except, maybe.... I'm not better ......

(Exits into a future with unpleasant social media)

This might be close to, if not the end of the play, but it's still half-baked!

(Ly comes out to the front of the stage, she is holding a cookie)

One thing about life, people can compare it to anything......life is like a hurricane, life is like a camera, life is like.....a cookie.....

It takes time to bake it, but only a moment to drop it....to break it.....to smash it......to eat it....to leave over the crumbs.....

You might have guessed already......I hated the bakery.  I hated working there...the ovens, the heat....the people!...I hated it all.....until Trevor.  I hated math....until Trevor.  And then, all of a sudden, something happened.

(She looks at the cookie differently)

Trevor explained to me how math and the bakery were connected.  He was taking chemistry, and he showed me how chemistry made all the cookies happen.  It was as if I'd been walking around with a blindfold and someone took it off and I saw the sun for the first time!

You see, I hated the bakery mostly because .....of the customers.  But I loved experimenting with all the cookies.  And the pastries, and how to make them taste better, with less cost.  That was me.  And that was chemistry.

I took the Chemistry class as soon as I could, over the summer, and it was the best summer of my life!  I had Trevor, and all the equations suddenly made sense.  I still had some trouble with algebra, but I didn't mind it as much, because it was like chemistry's ugly cousin, so, since I loved chemistry, I had to get along with algebra!

It all is about the numbers!  At 212 degrees Fahrenheit, the water in the dough turns into steam.  The vapors push through the dough, and the cookie starts to rise. The baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3 starts to break down into carbon dioxide gas which makes the cookie continue to rise!

Every dry element must go in the right order!  Because they all compete for the water!
If you put in too much salt - NaCl, these reactions are affected!  Not just the taste, but the actual physical structure is changed!  It was....(sighs) ....amazing!

And I started looking at how we did everything in these processes, and my grandma and Big G, they argued a little, but anything that saved money or made money, well, that was OK by them.

And they even started to like Trevor.....(giggles, a little embarrassed)....I heard them talk about chemistry, but they were not talking about the cookies....

(She puts on a lab coat, glasses)

I used the insurance money we got and went to college, into forensic chemistry, and now work in the coroner's office.

The chemistry changed my life....it also proved to me how the bakery burned down, and who did it.

(Lights go up on the skyline of the bakery, and we hear hammering, see Kim and  Big G watching)

KIM -   It never gonna be finished ....not before I die....

BG -  Before you die?  What about me?  You got no patience....everyone waiting for us to open up!  ...here, plant the seeds so we can have special cookies.....

(The two exit, as Ly watches her brother come out and nod to her.)

LY - So here's the story of my family, and the bakery.  As you sit there,  or maybe when you get home, you might be thinking, something's missing, something didn't make sense.

Which story is the right one?  The true one?  Fire is also a chemical reaction......so... Is the question -Does the bakery get rebuilt?   Or...maybe..... what happened to the person who burned it down?

(Her brother takes his gun and puts it on the floor, exits)

Ly - Sometimes, it takes years to find out the truth, and then when you do, you realize, it was there all the time......The seeds of doubt, the seeds of truth.....all in the same plant......

(As the lights dim, we see the sails of the ship and the bakery come together.  Lights dim.  Blackout.  The end)

(This is the mother from Good Enough Day # 1317)

Amazing.  I have a degree in communication, but I suppose I missed out on one of the basic ideas - make yourself understood.

You, my dear daughter, do not understand anything I have said for ...how long?

All right, in anger, perhaps I told you things, like all mothers do!...that are not the wisest.  Have you been so perfect with your daughter?  Have you said everything just right?  With all the psychology you took, did you never yell, never complain, never get so tired that you couldn't hold in all your annoyance and you just....lost it?  If the answer is no, well, God bless you, you are the first perfect mother I ever met!  Mine certainly wasn't!  You remember grandma only from the perspective of a two year old, a lovely old person who kissed you and gave you candy when I wasn't looking!

A grandma who was dead before you could understand what she said-  and she was not perfect, either.  I can well attest to that fact.

No, if I erred, it was to let you know that, if you wanted to be the star, you would have to accept reality - which is something young people rarely want to do.  I didn't want you destroyed by attempting to become a marathon champion if you only had one leg!

So sue me.  I mean, you can sue me or give it a break

I love you.  That is one thing I hope you know.  Does this man love you?

       (Waves her hand)

I know he has a name!  But right now, in my book, his name is mud, so let's just call him...this man.  Does he really love you?  I mean, have either one of you actually thought this through?  How is this supposed to work?  He plans to date other women for a year.....while LIVING WITH YOU AND YOUR DAUGHTER, but then, if he hasn't found .....hoooh, this is hard to say.....if he hasn't found someone...better....then, only then, will he marry you.

Amazing.  I am tempted to have you go to a lawyer, but how would this be done?

He gets to go out once a week, and then he comes back to you and gives you a review?  (As the man(  'Ok, honey, this one is nice, but you're better....so I guess, you're still in the running!'

Can you hear how that sounds?  Maybe you can't.  I'm sorry that you think I think you are not pretty enough or talented enough, because that is far from the truth.  But it's your life and your feelings, and I am not going to give you a blessing for marrying this man.

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Because it's not you I'm worried about...I don't think HE is good enough for you!

        (Lights down.  End of scene)

(This is a woman in her early forties, some might call her plain.  In fact, some do.  But she is not what she appears)

So you think I'm stupid, do you?  Shall I add that to the list, Mom?  Stupid, plain, wishy-washy, that's one of my favorites.  You would pull that out whenever I couldn't decide what to wear.

But this is not a wishy-washy moment.  I have made my decision.  This is the man for me.  Okay, the second man.  But he is steady.  He is reliable.  He helps me with my daughter - your granddaughter - and he is a professional.  He works hard.  He's able to provide for me, and any other children.  In the two years we have lived together, he has never been drunk, never hurt either of us, he has been considerate and pleasant to live with.  And I do care for him.  All right, I love him.

Ok, yes, he has  ....how did you put it?...an obnoxious offer for me.  He wants to have one year to see if he can find....someone.....(hard to say)...someone better.  And if he doesn't find anyone in this year, he'll marry me...

        (Listens)

Not stoop to marry me, not deign to marry me....just choose to marry me.

And I will be happy to marry him.  And he can live with us this year, and I don't care what you think.  Because I have learned that sometimes, being good enough is enough for me.

Where did I learn?  Remember when I wanted to be an actress and you told me I wasn't pretty enough to be the lead, and not talented enough to be the character?  They had meetings, where the writer would wait to see who showed up before giving out the best part......and I would wait, and hope that Amanda would be busy, or Hope would be in a show.....and if they were, I would get the part.  And I lived for those nights!

And then one night, the writer actually said to me, 'If Hope doesn't show up, I want you to play the lead' and I said, but it's only 7:30, and he said, 'so?' it'll give you time to read the lines, get used to them.  And I did, and she didn't come, so I did the part, and afterwards he came over, and thanked me, and as I was leaving, he thought I couldn't hear, but I do have good ears, right Mom?  And I heard him say, 'I would have preferred Hope, but that girl ...... was good enough'

Good enough.  That's all I have to be.

(Turns to leave, stops look back)

One year, we'll see if you get invited to the wedding mom......if you're good enough.

       (Exits to an interesting year)

(Young woman enters, looks at audience as if they are a mirror.  She examines her face closely)

That pimple is much smaller....I think.  Maybe they have some device to measure pimples.....

Or, maybe I don't want to know.

I mean, I'm sure Jody didn't notice, all he does is look at my boobs.  I don't even know why I bother with my face anyhow.....

        (She pokes at the spot)

Everyone tells me the concealer works fine, but why do I see it?

        (Something beeps on her watch)

Oh, boy, why do they waste all my time on these stupid classes!

         (Takes one last look)

It'll be fine tomorrow....I'm sure I'll look ok tomorrow.....

(She exits and returns with a jacket and purse, much more mature now.  Stares at the mirror)

I can do it.  I know I can.  This is only the most important presentation in two years.  And I am going to ace it......I look fine....I do....

         (She looks closer)

Is that.....a wrinkle?  No way!  (Examines)  How can that be?  It must be my imagination.....

         (Really peering now)

I'm too young for wrinkles!

This is a young person's game!  I can't go in there with a wrinkle!    Maybe something will cover it up...

        (She searches in her purse)

Come on, I know I bought some of that stuff....just in case.....insurance....for looking bad after a tiny little bit too much to drink......

       (Shakes purse)

What am I going to do?  Wait,  I could cover my face with my hand....

       (She practices)

There, that looks really natural....not!

(Buries her face in her hands)

I knew this would happen!  Today is the 13th!  Never a good omen!  Wait a minute.....

        (Looks at phone)

Okay, it's the 12th, I knew that......ok, deep breath, stand up straight.....

         (She stands up tall)

If I don't smile, I think that works!

(She keeps looking at herself as she exits)

All I have to do is get some sleep tonight....that's all....  But tomorrow, it'll be fine!

(She exits, and makes a circle, enters from the other side, now wearing a bathrobe, bent over a bit, yawning, stretching but not too loudly.  Looks in mirror.)

Who is that?  Mom?  Is that you?

          (She looks around)

Half asleep, I'm half asleep......She lives two hundred miles away....for now....I think.....hoo boy, what is happening?  Now, let me wash my face....I'm sure that will help...

(She splashes water and dries off)

There, much better.....

         (Looks again)

Well, maybe not......

         (Sighs heavily, turns to leave)

Tomorrow it will be better, I'll look like myself.....tomorrow....at Tara.....

(Laughs as she exits, comes back, bent over, with an old bathrobe, shuffling, looks and jumps back)

Who the hell is that?  They're letting in all kinds of trash into this place!

(She turns and then takes one last look)

At least that woman didn't have any pimples......

            (She shuffles off.....)
