(The ant runs onstage, urgent and efficient, directing traffic)

Keep it moving!  We are here for a reason!  Remember the reason!  Water!  We need water for the queen!  Water for the workers!  There is a drought!  All restrictions on personal water use must be strictly observed!  Do not drink the water from the shiny river!  Bring it back to the nest!

You will be given your ration AT THE NEST!

(He hovers over some of the 'herd' and pushes at others then leans his antenna over and waves them, looking worried)

What is that smell?  I smell something.......not good.  Not water!

        (Waves antenna, shaking head)

Don't give me that!  You've all been trained!  You know what water is!  And this is......wait a minute....I think I've got a memory of this....

(Jiggles antenna like a computer of sorts, begins to look very worried)

Oh, no!  Nooooooooo!  Stop the line!  Everyone back to the nest!  Right now!

(He sees no one is listening, tries to stop some)

I've smelled this before!  It's......something horrible!  It tastes good, but if we bring it back to the queen.....she will die!  Don't bring it back!  Don't drink it yourselves!

        (Falls to knees)

The horror!  The horror!

(Reaches over, rubs something on the ground and then touches it to his antenna.  Smiles)

Eye, there's the rub!  It tastes so.....mmmmmm....

(Rubs at the ground some more and now smears it all over the antenna)

Why does it have to taste so........delicious?

(Goes to get more, suddenly stops)

That's what it does!  It.....intoxicates us!  It makes us forget why we are here!  That our entire purpose is to serve the queen!  We must stop!  We must be strong!  We must take the water from the giant's home and save ourselves!

(Runs to others to no avail)

Stop!  We must not falter!  We must resist or we shall all......

(Looks around at the falling ants)

Or we shall all die.......

      (Looks up)

I knew the giants would win.....they always do!  They have rivers in their homes that start and stop and all types of foods that are difficult to get into....... Thank God they are so messy, or we would all starve.. but they cannot live with all of us....they must kill us with their poisons......well, we may lose this battle......but we will never give up,

(Turns to leave stops looks back)

Even if there is trouble in river city.......we will survive.......

(Exits.  Never the end of ants)

Monologue Mania Day #600 Seeds of Doubt(grandmother) by Janet S. Tiger  Oct. 4, 2015

This is the grandmother of the brother and sister from Days # 598 and 599

(An older Asian woman enters, she is small, but with great power, although very tired.  She goes over to the Buddha and kneels to pray, lifting her hands to her forehead)

Do I speak to you in vietnamese?  Or in funny language.  This English is so hard on the mouth, it is like eating chili pepper with nothing to calm.

Mouth hurts.  Is it forty years now?  I think so.  Time goes fast in this land.  I remember when I was little, time is slow, the seasons move slow.

Until the war, then everything is fast.  We come here, life is fast.  Too fast I think.

(Sighs heavily)  I have to say prayer for my grandson.  He is with big problem.  I can see it, I know you see it, too.  Please help him.  I have not asked for much, since we come here to America, but leaving home, it makes life hard for children.

They have no home, my grandson born here, but still with one foot somewhere else.  Hard to stand straight and tall when feet like that.

They tell me someone burn down church, because they hate us.  Then our bakery burn.....maybe same people who hate.  But.....maybe not.  Maybe...another reason.  My eyes may be getting old, but I see with my heart......something is very wrong.....help me.....

(She stands, walks slowly to leave, looks back, takes a coin and places it with the Buddha statue, looks around)

(Giggling)  Maybe take that, get some mint candy....good for big belly full of gas!  Sorry, not mean to make fun.....well, yes....I did!

(She laughs, leaving slowly as lights dim on scene)

(Chau, the brother of the sister in Day # 598, is standing outside, smoking a cigarette, he is clearly troubled, he looks up.)

I wish you were still here, Van, maybe you could help me now......I don't know what to do.  The fire was....scary.....and now my sister, she has too many questions.  I wish she would get married and leave this house.... ever since we were kids, she knows me too good.  Sometimes because we just a year apart, people think we're twins, but not really, except in heart.

One time, we were little....we were in a store, and I look around, don't see anyone.....

(He goes around stage, as if back in the store)

..... she was always looking at the makeup and girl stuff.....and there was this toy.....a toy gun,

(He points his finger like a toy pistol)

........and I wanted it, and we never had toys that were new, all old toys from the cousins.

I wanted that gun, it was so cool, you know, and I put it under my jacket, and I walked outta the store, and I was scared, and I was waiting for police to come get me, like on TV......and nobody comes, and grandma comes out with sister Ly, we go home, and the whole way, Ly is watching me......I could tell she knew.

When grandma go to make dinner, Ly come into my room.  She say nothing, but I know she knows, so I ask her how she knows.  You my brother she says, I just know.

Are you gonna tell grandma?  Or Mom?  She looks at me, really mad.  I'm not telling anyone!  And she left me alone....... she never told.

Every time I played with that gun, I felt guilty....

(He runs across the stage, playing cops and robbers)

And she would look at me and she never knew I finally threw that toy gun away.

(He takes out a real gun from his pocket and holds it very lovingly, turns to leave, stops, looks back.)

She thinks she knows, but she don't know everything.  I'm just afraid, that maybe, what she does know......is gonna make trouble.  That's why, I wish you were here to help, Van, that you weren't dead....

(He puts the gun back in his pocket and exits.  Blackout)

(Young Asian girl is seen, she is pretty, but not very aware of it.  She is studying, sees her brother enter, is watching him carefully. slight accent)

Where you been out so late?

(When he doesn't answer, she closes her textbook, goes over to him)

You think you can hide from me.  Not possible, my dear brother.  I know you were out very late another night, and it's not that girl from the Von's either.  She thinks you too short for her.  She's right....

(He tries to avoid her but she persists)

That big fire was bad for everyone, but lucky we have good insurance, right?  Right?  From your friend you meet at the party!

(Getting upset)  You think I don't know what happened?  I see you playing with the oven.....I know you study all about fire in  your science class!  Everyone thinks you so brave!  But I don't think so!  I think you stupid!  What if fire go to other stores?  What if someone get hurt?  (Concerned)  What if you got hurt?

You think this gonna solve all our problems, but I don't think so.  I think maybe this start even more trouble for our family, like we don't have enough trouble!

(She goes over to him, he won't look her in the face)

You don't have to say nothing...I know the truth......and maybe I never tell anyone.....but in my heart, I know your heart, because we like twins you and me. ......

(She turns to go back to studying, lifts a book and shakes it at him)

One story here say.....once the seeds of doubt are sown......didn't know what that meant until you come home that night......

And I could see......not good things in your eyes........

       (He exits, blackout)

Monologue Mania Day #597 Cancelled by Janet S. Tiger  Oct. 1, 2015

Based on a true story which everyone with a computer will understand......

                                              Cancelled
a monologue by Janet S. Tiger

(Disheveled, dismayed and dumbfounded, the actor enters, looks around wildly.)

Due to circumstances beyond our control, due to a horrible event that has reduced the author to a blubbering ball of spit.....in other words, due to a computer shutdown......everything has been cancelled!

(They run offstage gibbering unintelligibly......what happens when we depend on technology instead of pencil and paper.  But not to worry, tomorrow - with the help of magic and the amazing computer repair people  -all will be restored - and the monologue will again be longer than one sentence!)

Monologue Mania Day #596 What's the Big Deal? by Janet S. Tiger  Sept. 30, 2015

This is actually an idea for a short animated video.  Would it work as a monologue (or two) without the visual?  Not sure, but am working on it!

(A large man is seen, drinking a beverage from a mug.  He is smiling, enjoying the drink.  A large woman enters, sees the man and is annoyed)

WOMAN -  I knew it!  I knew it!  I just knew it!

(She goes over to the mug and looks in, then grabs it and takes a swig)

MAN -  I know you knew it.....we're a very knowing couple......

WOMAN - (Furious)  If you washed out the mug, I would never have known!

(She looks behind the man, shakes head)

WOMAN -  Well, maybe never is an imaginary long time!

MAN -  Stop being so worried and annoyed about everything, it'll ruin your enjoyment of the now!

WOMAN -  Enjoyment of the now?  What is that supposed to mean?

MAN -  It means this.....

(We see him reach and take a sugar cube and drop it into his coffee as she watches, furious)

MAN -  Sweet!

WOMAN -  Amazing! I've been working on this all day....why didn't you use the ones from the box!
I asked you to PLEASE use the ones from the box!

MAN - (Unconcerned)  What's the big deal?

WOMAN -  (Almost ranting)  What's the big deal?  (Starting to stamp her feet)  What's the big deal?  (Almost foaming at the mouth)  WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?

MAN -  (Calm, sipping)  Yeah, what's the big deal?  I asked you to make me a cup of coffee, and you said you were busy, and I figure....what's the big deal?  I'll make it myself....and I did, and .....(smiling, seductive).....you know I like sweet stuff in my drink, baby....

(He reaches over and grabs her around the waist, bringing her closer)

MAN -  And you know I like your sweet stuff.....so, whaddaya say?

(Even though annoyed, she starts to giggle)

MAN -  You can finish later......right?  There's always tomorrow......

(He takes her arm and they start to walk off.  She looks back, suddenly takes a sugar cube and runs  puts the cube on top of a pile of other cubes.  He shakes his head, reaches out his hand. )

WOMAN -  I guess you're right, there's always tomorrow......

(As they exit, the camera will show a distant image of what looks like stacked sugar cubes.....in a shape we recognize as.....the real pyramids of Giza......and there are a few of the stones missing........but, hey?what's the big deal, it's still impressive from most of the angles....)

(This is an older woman who is dragging a box onto the stage.  She sits, opens the box and takes out a dusty notebook, opens it and starts to read, shaking her head.  She puts the book down.)

I don't know if this is right, to read journals written by someone else, someone who is still alive.....and yet.....they are fascinating!  I can't stop!

(She opens another one and reads, then closes it)

I feel so strange!  These are from years ago!  What harm does it do!  And yet, I feel like I'm intruding...like I'm stealing the past......or maybe not.....

      (Digs in and finds another)

Things about her......I never knew.....or if I knew, can't recall.......the past is such a strange place to visit.......or is it just an illusion?  Maybe everything in these books is a lie?  How would I know?

Why do I care?

Should I give them back?  I can't....that woman is long gone.....I doubt if I could ever find her.......

(She looks at one page, then turns it, getting engrossed, then she starts to cry, but stops, closes the book)

I think that's enough for now.  Perhaps....some things are best left in the attic......

Perhaps .....these wouldn't be so hard to read.....if I didn't know the author......

(She puts back the book, closes the box, turns to leave, stops, looks back)

If the writer wasn't me......

     (She exits.....)
