(There is a circle of chairs, with a section open so that it feels like the audience is a part of the circle.  The chairs are filled with people of all ages - from teenager to 80s - and they are talking together, laughing.  Suddenly FRANKIE rolls onstage in a wheelchair and turns to the audience.

FRANKIE -  You're new!   We always love a fresh face!  Well, actually, we love anyone’s
face because most of us have to take care of someone ….and sometimes, just sometimes......we get really sick of looking at that same face all day!  Right, gang?

             (The group laughs and agrees)

And other times, we get really annoyed, like when our loved ones do stupid things, like diabetics who eat a chocolate cake for breakfast, washed down with a liter of Coke, of course!  Or they have back surgery and are told DO NOT LIFT ANYTHING and they come home and what do they do?

(Encourages the others to join in)

THEY LIFT!  Even though they know it could end them up BACK IN THE HOSPITAL!  Or they refuse to take their medicine ...oh, yeah!  Or they are now two years old inside their brain, but they have adult bodies and no one wants them running around outside… ……totally naked!

Now this doesn't mean we hate the people we love....it’s just …. sometimes we want to run away.......but we can't because we're all CRAZY!  ...and.......we have some strange sense of duty ....or...maybe....love....... and that's why....we come here....

(She now stands up from the wheelchair)

FRANKIE  - So now, we welcome you to Caregivers Anonymous, where you can say anything
and it will be kept completely confidential - where you can tell us what you are going through...because each of us here is on the same journey, maybe at different places along the path, but we can give you a heads up about where some of the potholes are.....and how to avoid them without becoming a pothead!

         (The others jeer at this)

Or a drunk, or suicidal......or ........sick.

(She spins the wheelchair on one wheel)

And this......this is the wheelchair of fortune!  Everyone has a chance to sit here and tell their story.  Why a wheelchair?  Because it's a reminder that, no matter how bad it is to be the caretaker.....it ain't so easy for the ones we are taking care of!    And when you are ready, you get to take a ride in it, and tell everyone why YOU are here.......

          (The play begins)

(This is a salesman, and he is really selling it!  He enters with a big smile, then takes a massive fall.)

I've fallen, and I can't get up!  You've heard it, you know it, well, it's time you get off your keester and buy this button!

(Pulls out a necklace with a device attached, waves it at the audience)

If you have a young person around you don't even have to get off that keester!  Have that youngster order you a Save Your Life button!  From the Save Your Life Goddamit!  company that you all know and love!

What're you waiting for?  Haven't you ever fallen down?  Haven't you ever had a friend who fell down?   If you said 'no' - I DON'T BELIEVE YOU!  And if you said 'yes'?  What the hell are you waiting for?  For something horrible to happen and you're lying there on the floor WISHING YOU HAD BOUGHT THIS?

(He takes out a cloth and wipes his brow)

Well, I did my best.  If you don't listen to reason.....I have another item you can purchase for only $5.99..........

(He opens the cloth and it's a T-shirt - he holds it up)

If you're not gonna buy this useful device because you want to just lie there and die........just get this T-shirt that says....'Step Over Me'....

(He turns to leave, stops, looks back)

I can guarantee it's the last T-shirt you'll ever need!

(He exits - but I don't want my friends and family members who need this device to exit, so PLEASE get the button!)

(Older woman enters, on a walker, but waving)

Hello, hello, thank you, thank you!

It's nice to have so many folks wishing me a Happy Birthday!  But please DO NOT have a birthday cake with more than one candle!  I cannot blow out a hundred three of them!

Now, because it's my birthday and I'm not just over the hill, but over the 100th hill! they wanted me to tell everyone how I got to be so old.....well, I think that's one of the stupidest questions I hear......and I hear it every year, so I outta know!

How the hell would I know?  I mean, if I tell you it was good luck, what does that mean, anyhow?  And I tell you it was God's good grace, does that mean a person who dies at 20 does not have God's good grace?  See, there's the conundrum......ooh, I still love that word!

So, here's my advice, for whatever it's worth, as my father used to say, with your advice and a nickel you can get a cup of coffee.  Only now, the coffee is $5.00!  Does that mean the advice is worth more?  You be the judge!

My suggestion is simple.  If you think there's any chance of living to be 100, .....when you're sixty....start makin' young friends.

There......you probably thought I was gonna say to take care of yourself.  Who the hell knows how to do that?  I have had a drink before bed every night since I was thirty, did it hurt me?  No.  What kept me alive was turning just in time to see that big cement truck about to run me over and I jumped outta the way.......but the day to day, you gotta have young friends, because the ones you made when you were in school, well, they're all gone....or will be soon.  Just like family goes......

        (She wipes an eye)

Now to make friends, you either gotta help someone young....or buy them.  You see, when I was sixty, I didn't have a lotta money, but I was a grandma, and so I started makin' friends of my grandchildren.....and their friends.  A good policy.

Now I make friends  with THEIR grandchildren......same reason......here.....

(She pulls out a phone and waves it)

The young ones will figure out the new geegaws like this......I can talk to it and it will call people and make notes, and remind me to drink water every hour....all I have to say is...Hello Google.....oh no, now it's gonna talk to me)

(She pushes a button and puts the phone away)

And make sure your friends all have a good sense of humor!  If you ever go to a playground or a pool, you see kids laughing.  Why do they laugh so much?  Ignorance!  They have no idea what's coming up for them!  The troubles, the pain......they just know how to have a good time......The more you know, the less you laugh, because, that my friends in TV land......is the bliss of ignorance.........so, if you hang around kids, you will laugh more.....and in time, that might be the only exercise you get!

         (Listens)

Okay, that's it for my big advice.  Do I get my cake now?  I want my cake!

(she turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Oh, last piece of advice to live this long.......KEEP BREATHING!

(She laughs as she leaves, for more cake and laughs)

(This is an older man, late 80s, not in bad shape, but bent over, depressed.  He is talking to his grandson)

Dreams?  You don't think I have dreams?  Everyone has dreams!  Just because you get old doesn't mean you don't got any dreams!

Eric, look at me!  Look at me and see what I feel like inside!  See this?

(He pulls out a photo and shakes it)

This is me on the inside!  Me when I was 22!  Sure I was at war, but I was alive!  I had a dream to survive and come back and marry your grandmother.... a dream to start a family!  And I survived that war!  With a bullet still in my leg, but I didn't care!  And when your mother was born that bullet didn't hurt, and when you were born.......that was even better......and when I see you now, all grown up, almost as old as when I went to war.....I see some of my dreams....came true......and maybe.... I gotta find some new dreams.....something...up-to-date.......like the cell phones, only better, because I still can't figure out how they work.......maybe that's a dream, to figure out modern technology....

(He takes out the cell phone....looks at it....shakes his head 'no', puts it back in his pocket)

So maybe my dreams have changed, but I still got 'em!  They may be simpler now.....but they are every bit as real.....my dream is not to be a burden........my dream is to not to be in pain........my dream is .....not to suffer anymore.....

(He turns to leave, stops, looks back)

.....you see, my dear boy, my biggest dream now..(deep sigh)...is to die in my sleep.......

(He exits, but only from the scene)

(The writer comes out, she is beaming)

A few years ago - I am not stating the exact number of years so I can use this monologue forever!- a few years ago tonight...... was a very special night........ the last night I was pregnant with you.

I knew that tomorrow was going to be the day, I just knew it.  Maybe because you were not the first, but the second child.    Just like the first time for anything, there's a lot more nervous with baby one,  What to expect, what to do........But you were my first girl.....my only girl......and I remember that first day when you arrived as if it was yesterday.

It was an easy delivery compared to the first, and you were beautiful.

With all the words I have at my disposal, I can't think of a better one to describe you, because you are still beautiful - or should I say, more beautiful.

More because you are an adult......and you are a wonderful soul.  Loving, and with a great capacity for laughter, and helping others, and strength and joy and fighting spirit to get through the difficult times.

And I love knowing you.  And I am honored to be your mother.........on this day, your birthday.....and on all days.

Happy Birthday, my beautiful girl!  And many more!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

For Irene -always!

Monologue Mania Day #922 Escape From Storage Unit 273 by Janet S. Tiger (c) Aug. 22,  2016

Due to several requests, am bringing this monologue back -revised -originally posted -
Day # 164  July 26, 2014

                                Escape from Storage Unit 273

A monologue by Janet S. Tiger

© all rights reserved                                                                                                                                                         tigerteam1@gmail.com

(A woman crawls onstage, pushing a large box, that is obviously very heavy.  She stops, exhausted, hot, sweaty, not in great shape.)

That's it.  It's over.  After five years, I'm free!

              (She struggles to her feet.)

This is the last box.  I promise!  And I will throw most of the stuff out.  I promise!

(She opens the top of the box.)

Oh, my God......

(She lifts out a bag of items)

This is my stuff from the top of my dresser.  I looked for this for years!

(Opens a bottle, makes a face of disgust.)

I guess that perfume was better five years ago when we moved.....

             (She lifts a calendar)

This is from ten years ago...what the hell was I saving it for?

            (Flips through, shaking head)

It's empty......why would I save an old, empty calendar?

            (Flips through again)

Oh.....now I remember!  These pictures were so beautiful, I was going to frame them!  But now....

            (She examines the pages)

I think the years made them not so beautiful.......

(She puts a hand through her hair.)

Ain't that the sad truth......

(She reaches in again, pulling out another object)

And what, pray tell, is this?

            (She looks closely, shaking head)

I have absolutely no idea!  And I paid......

(Reaches into a pocket and pulls out a paper which she examines in horror.)

That I paid....not hundreds, but thousands!  Thousands of dollars to save!

            (She drops to her knees)

What is wrong with me Oprah?
I watched your show and I tried to simplify!  I did my best!  And look at me!  Five years to empty out two storage units!  And I still have junk in the van I rented to carry all this.....(sputtering)....JUNK!

(She shakes her head, now goes to the box, starts to laugh, pulls out an old issue of Oprah)

Amazing!  I saved this!  And why?

(She reads the cover and starts to laugh, almost maniacally)

‘How to avoid using storage units  - Tips on decluttering before, during and after a move’

Wow, did that work well! I even had a bookmark in there!

          (Opens, reading)

' You can save a great deal of money by de-cluttering before your move, avoiding ......(takes a deep breath)  avoiding LENGTHY RENTALS OF STORAGE UNITS
.’ (Mocks)  ‘Those can really add up!’

You tell me, Oprah, you have a billion dollars to spend on storage....or maybe.....

          (Looks around)

Maybe you own this place?

         (Shivers, keeps reading)

‘Unless the item has true sentimental value, do not store replace-ables like.......(smiles)...perfume, that you might forget, and which will lose their fragrance after years of storage.’

           (Throws head back laughing)

There's a newsflash!

(Reading)  ‘Avoid saving unnecessary papers.  This includes old calendars with nothing written on them.....’

           (She picks up the calendar.)

‘And office supplies that can rust or lose working ability, like staples or scotch tape......’

(She now opens the box gingerly, reaches in, brings out....you guessed it.....scotch tape and a box of staples.  She opens the staples, nods.)

Rusted.

(Tries to get a piece of tape, the dispenser....doesn't work.)

Oooh, this is too weird......

(She reads quickly to herself, looking into the box occasionally, horrified.)

Amazing, she wrote an article and it's just for me......

(Reads, starting to sound more like Oprah as she goes)

'Of course it's just for you, and you deserve it after finally gettin' rid of that storage unit!  Come on, you know you did good!  Give yourself a pat on the back!  Go ahead.....do it!'

(She gives herself a pat on the back, smiles, keeps reading)

'There, didn't that feel good?  Now I want you to do this...it's gonna be hard, but you can do it... I want you to walk away from the box.....'

(She looks around, did she actually read that?  Continues to read)

'You heard me, girl, one step...you can do it.... you know there's nothin' in there you need!'

(She looks back in the box, then she reads)

'Don't go back to the box!  You haven't needed anything in there for five years!  So there is nothin'  in there you need now!  Walk away!  Do it for me!  Do it for yourself!'

(She starts to walk away, reading)

'There you go, I knew you could do it!   You are now free of Storage Unit 273.....'

         (She looks around, how .....reads)

'Of course I knew which unit!  I know everything!  I have more spies than the CIA!  I have more money than the CIA!  Now keep walking!

(She walks to the edge of the stage.)

'That's the way, one foot in front of the other.......it's not so hard.....you can do it!  And when you leave here, you go take a shower and get your nails done, girl you look like crap!'

(She takes the magazine and starts to throw it into the box, but stops and reads one last thing)

'But never throw out this magazine!  Or I will come and get you and fill your house with more junk!  And that's not a threat, that's a promise!'

(She tries to throw the magazine out, but she finally just takes it and runs off.....but then runs back on and into the box it goes!  She lifts her arms high and smiles)

Free!

(Now she exits.  The end......of some of the junk.)
