Monologue Mania Day # 1177 One Word by Janet S. Tiger (c) May 5, 2017

(The director comes out - very irritated, a little blurry)

One word that was all ......it was one word..... silly you might say. Well, the word was not silly but the word was silly...I mean the word was a silly word ....I guess actually every word can be silly if put into the correct location. Sometimes in rehearsals, I get the actors to think about -what if it was a different word the writer put here. But then the writer came to rehearsal.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the writer at rehearsals.... well, not too much .....well, maybe not at all..... actually, it's much better when they stay away .....I mean, it may be their play but it's kind of like sending your child to school. You have to let your child go and you have to let them learn that it's a big world out there and the audience doesn't always like your play.... I mean the audience doesn't like your play the way you wrote it.....

I mean..... not all the students like your child......sometimes, not even the teacher likes your kid....and sometimes there's a bully otherwise known as a  critic and that your kid has to get a thick skin to get through kindergarten ......and the theater.

And that is the purpose of a cast and a director .......

So we have the chance to fix the play .....which is hopefully what the playwright wants.....but this is not necessarily the case because just like the parent with the child who is perfect, the playwright can only say that every word I wrote is perfect!!

So the playwright comes and he's a nice guy usually ......I have never worked with him before but he doesn't have a bad reputation. So when he insists that the actor who's having trouble saying the word learn to say the word EXACTLY the way the writer wants it, well....there can be trouble.....Silleeee, not silly, the way everyone pronounces it, but silleeeee.  What difference can it possibly make?  Does it change the meaning of the line?  No.  No it affect the meaning of the play?  No.  Does it matter at all? NOOOO!

The writer is very, what's a good word?....pushy?....and wants to make sure that the actor learns the word just the right way even though I say you might consider just switching the word because, after all,  that's what the actor is probably going to do on stage because in my 25 years as a director I found that when the actor is uncomfortable usually you find another word!

Now, you have to understand this is one of the finest actors we have in town....

This actor is so good, he was off book in the first week which even in this good company is very impressive. He has researched the role even so far as visiting with some of the people who do this kind of work in real life to get an idea of what it feels like to be a plumber.

So when an actor like this actually  has a problem, I work with him or her and we figure out a way....and if the playwright is thankfully two thousand miles away..... then we just change the word.......but no!   The playwright is in town!  That is why I not like to do the work of  local writers!!

         (Getting a little wild-eyed)

So one word almost brings down the whole production!

Because the actor gets mad and he rest of the cast is going crazy watching this crap and the end result is nothing positive out of rehearsal which is why I brought this gun today!

You see my new directing technique is a bit more...how should I put it?  Direct!  So, the first person who argues with me it's going to have to answer not to me.... but to the gun!

          (Smiles when seeing the reaction)

Before you think I'm gone ballistic this is not a gun with bullets - this is a paintball gun.

Anyone who argues with me over one word or another is going to get hit with this!

And if you're hit with five spots of paint today .....you will not get paid for today.... and I don't care!  I just don't care what anyone says about it!

         (Looks around wildly)

What are those men standing over there?   Why is the police here?  .....it's only a joke!.... that's the problem with the world today..... no one can take a joke!!

(He turns to leave, stops, looks back)

  Silly me!

(He exits to a nice quiet room)

(Young man comes out, in a suit and tie.  He takes a deep breath)

My father died just one year ago.  On Cinco de Mayo.....

          (He holds up his hands)

No, don't give me your condolences......I hadn't seen him in ten years.......he died in prison/.....and I didn't go to the funeral.  But on the anniversary, I put on a suit, and I go to church and say a prayer.  Not for him, for me.  Because.....he's gone, and I still need the prayers.

He was in a gang.  For his whole life.  Before prison, when he got of prison, when he went back to prison because he didn't want to make a deal with the police to get less time.  He was loyal.  Never would be a rat.....even though the guys in the gang didn't help my mother and me and my brothers and sisters when my Dad went to prison......I didn't forget that.

It was my uncle, Uncle Miguel.  He helped me.  He gave me a job, made me go to school, be proud of me, not always afraid people would find out....about my father.

A man has a choice.  My father made some bad choices.  I think I learned from him, how to live....how not to live.....

But I can't forgive him for something, something ...I want to be proud of, but I can't.... not yet.

I am proud my family came from Mexico, I am proud that Cinco de Mayo means something to my family........but.....I can't forgive my father ......

(Shakes his head, turns to leave, stops, looks back)

And his friends, for choosing badly....you see.....the name of his gang....was.... Cinco......

         (Lights down, end of scene)

(Older man enters, he peers into the crowd)

Senior Channel - never thought I'd be on this myself, but after I told all my friends what happened, they insisted I come on and share.

You see, what happened was this, and it's all true.  I woke up one morning, and I was in hell.

You heard me, hell.  Like very hot.  Very VERY hot.  I'm 91, so I know, I'm in hell.

And I was sweating, and I was thinking, boy, I knew I did some things, but I didn't think they were so bad.  I mean, I did not tell the IRS when I won money in Vegas.  So, shoot me!  Okay, maybe not shoot me, but you don't have to melt me either!

And OK, maybe when my neighbor's wife walked around in her underwear, I looked, but I never had an affair with her, so hey, I'm normal, and if she didn't want anyone to look, she could have closed those curtains, right?

But these aren't the biggies, are they?  No murder, no big theft, no selling drugs to schoolchildren, I led a pretty quiet life.  So why do I deserve....hell?

          (Listens, waves his hands)

Okay, okay, I'm getting there!  So I wake up, it's boiling hot!  I mean I was melting!  And I think, if this is hell, maybe I got a good room because it looks just like my old bedroom.  Down to the last ripped pillowcase and the kleenexes on the floor, which, I wondered, had not burned up.

And there I was, in my regular pjs, and I notice, unlike the visions of hell, there was no fire, but the sun was bright and I saw my trusty thermometer from my grandson, Burton, well, it was 82 outside, and 95 inside.....and the heater was blasting!  What kind of a hell was this?

So I go to the living room, and the heater is on, and the damned needle thingy won't turn off the damned heater!  And that's why it was so hot!  So that's my story, and if you don't like it.....I don't care......all I can say is 'go to hell'!

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Not too many people can say, I went to hell, and I lived to tell!

(He exits - but not to hell!)

(The actor is smirking, takes out a giant handkerchief and holds it out)

There, there, will this help?  Is it big enough for all those tears?  Oh, boo- hoo!  I am just so upset seeing you cry about your big decision.....what should you do with all the money you just got?

How much was it that uncle left you?  A measly hundred and fifty....THOUSAND ...dollars!  Oh, yes, not enough to live on forever, not enough for you to invest, or to buy a house....unless the house was in Pittsburgh......and if you pay back people you owe money to....only a hundred thirty thousand would be left!  Oh, more boo-hoo!  By the way, you could start with that $20 you never paid back last year, but who's counting?

And now everyone is coming to ask you for money!  Boo-hoo!  You don't know who your friends are!

Wah, wah!  Sob sob!  Sniff, sniff!

           (Listens)

What's that you say?  I don't sound...sincere?  Oh, my, is that so evident?  What was the first clue?  The fact I'm annoyed you are worried about how to spend a whole shitload of money in front of a starving actor who can barely pay the rent each month?  The other fact that it irritates me that you appear almost completely ungrateful for this windfall?

Or the fact that....you haven't offered me one red cent!

(Turns to leave, stops, looks back)

Of course there is one more tiny little fact......I wish it were me with all your problems.....Boo- hoo!

(Takes the handkerchief, exits blowing nose loudly )

(A woman comes onstage wearing a wreath of flowers on her head.  She has a basket of flowers in her hand and throws them into the crowd.)

Mayday!  mayday!  My father used to love to say that while we watched the parades on May 1st.  Because he had a bad leg from when he was hit by a car., my father couldn't walk with his friends, but he could wave and shout....  (Like a father, loud) 'Mayday!  Mayday!' and then he would explain....(father's voice) 'Mayday means - 'help' .... 'trouble' - and those people need help and make trouble!'

I didn't understand when I was little - I would ask him - if they make trouble, why do we go watch their parades every year?

And he would just smile and say -  'May  is just another way of saying 'Maybe'  - and maybe is a magic word!  It may happen means maybe it will happen, maybe life will get more fair for the workers, for the poor......maybe not right away, but maybe some day.

Maybe is such a powerful word, he would tell me.

Maybe is the leap from 'no' and 'never' and 'can't' and 'won't'  Before you have a yes, you have a maybe.  And that's why maybe is...a magic word!

So that's when I said, 'Can we have a dog?'

He just laughed and explained that we lived in an apartment, and dogs were not allowed.

I remember thinking for a moment.

(She stands, like a child, finger in mouth)

(Young)  So, if we moved to a different place, Daddy, MAYBE we could have a dog?

(She throws back her head and guffaws)

And he laughed and laughed.

So I said......(as a child)  Maybe?

                 (She is quieter)

He stopped laughing, looked at me very quietly....and said.....the magic word....maybe.

And I held onto that 'maybe' for years - through the horrid place with the neighbors that argued till three in the morning, to the tiny cramped apartment on an alley where the garbage trucks would wake us up every day.  That maybe helped keep me going, until one day, after my father's father passed away, and there was a small inheritance that came to us, and we moved to a neighborhood with lawns, and grass, and...dogs.  The day we moved in, with all the boxes still unpacked on the floor, I asked my father.....(older child)  Dad, how about that dog?

And he looked and said.......May......

I remember how my heart fell, because may always meant 'may..be'

But this time, he said......'You may'......and he smiled.......and the next day, we went to the pound!

You never forget your first love....especially when he wags his tail at you.....

(She whirls around as if holding a dog in her arms)

And that's the way it is with all of them!  I wrote about my first dog, and won a contest.  That turned me into a writer, and, the books I wrote about dogs allow me to help all the strays I can here on my farm.

Maybe you can help, too...see that big number on the screen.

(She indicates the side of the stage)

The Senior Channel is supporting your local pound so that maybe you can help save an animal today.

(She indicates the side of the stage)

Just......maybe......if you can't help today, maybe.... tomorrow......

Make today a 'maybe' day.......

(She turns and walks off. Maybe.... the end of this monologue!)
