(Out comes Ben Franklin, reading a list and shaking his head.)

Any of you here fans of history?  Raise your hands please!

            (He looks around and nods)

Then some of you must have stumbled across my funniest work - and no, it is not my own favorite...Fart Proudly!.....no, this was not originally intended to provoke merriment... but self-righteousness always has a bonus side effect of giggles and in this case, outright guffaws!

When I was a lad of just 20 years, I wrote this list to improve myself......it worked only in the sense that in writing the list, I identified valuable lessons for myself....whether I actually succeeded, well, that's where the humor emerges!

(Reading quickly from the list)  TemperanceSilenceOrderResolutionFrugalityIndustry.SincerityJusticeModerationCleanlinessTranquillity
ChastityHumility

(Sighs deeply)  All admirable traits!  How sad that only one of them was I able to actually accomplish!  One by one.......temperance.....eat not to dullness, drink not to elevation.....Why live at all? What is the fun of living if you can't stuff yourself like a sausage!  And as for drinking, why beer is the very proof that God loves us!

Now for the second.........(very quiet)   ....Silence.....(roars with laughter)  ME silent!  Now there's a joke!  Speak not what may not benefit you or others...avoid trifling conversation!  My list takes all the fun out of...everything!  Order....now there's one I wished I had listened to myself about....let all your things have their places.......how time has tricked me with that....I used to know where everything was....now.....I just know I knew......little help when the search is on for the missing item!

Resolution....resolve to perform what you ought....perform with fail what you resolve....simply put, do what you promise.......well, maybe I succeeded a bit with that, for I did help forge a country, but I was not alone......so.....next!

Frugality....waste nothing......Always easier said than done.....but it is nice to see that today people like to reuse, recycle and revolt......oh, wait, that was us!

Now for Industry.....Waste no time!   I think that the most fun ever had - outside of the physical pleasures!....is the joy of wasting time.....I may have done much, but much of what I've done was accomplished by....wasting time until the solution appeared......of course, the wasting of said time was accomplished by completely ignoring the parts about temperance!

Sincerity....use no hurtful deceit......think innocently and justly....and if you speak, speak accordingly.......no hurtful deceit.....if I'd followed these words, I would never have told King Louis that England would be furious if our new country got to keep the land up to the Mississippi.....and that giving us all that land was worth it, just to make the English mad!  I couldn't believe he would believe it, but believe it he did, and so our country stands whole.....because I was less than wholly sincere......

Justice.....wrong none by doing injuries......or omitting the benefits that are your duty.  (Sighs heavily)  Would that I could fix this one......and go back and do right by my dear wife......I did her no justice by not returning when she was sick, and dying.....yet a country I helped forge with my diplomacy, otherwise known as a lack of sincerity......

(Wipes his eyes as he looks at the list)

And now moderation.....avoid extremes!  Now there's a laugher! I learned soon that moderation is for the wise.....yet I refused to be wise!  And these three....cleanliness, tranquility, chastity!  Hysterical all!

I liked air baths, and one of my great loves of the French life was parfume!  So I would not have to have the baths that made so many ill......Tranquility.....my life burbled with events from start to the last days of it!  And the last one of that unholy triumvirate....CHASTITY!  What a hoot!  I loved my lady friends, and they loved me, air baths and all!

So....which of these did I actually accomplish?  The last of course!  Humility!  Imitate Jesus and Socrates.  And so I did!  I may not have shared the humility with them....but I share something deeply with both......
we are all dead!

           (Lights down, end of scene)

Monologue Mania Day #934 The God Forbid List (for the Senior Channel) by Janet S. Tiger (c) Sept. 3,  2016

First installment of the Senile Sisters here
This may also be used somewhere in CAREGIVERS ANONYMOUS

(The two sisters come onstage holding a framed paper)

SISTER ONE - Here it is folks!

SISTER TWO - Can you get the camera to do a close-up?

(They hold up the paper like a prize)

S1 -  There!  Impressive, right?

S2 -   I hope so, because I have no idea what it is?

S1 -  You silly thing you...it's a list we did over two years ago!  I just found it in the pile!

S2 -  Two years ago?  You must mean a million years ago....

S1 - Close enough!  See what we called the list.....

          (They read together)

S1 and S2 -  THE GOD FORBID LIST

S2 - Wow!  Isn't that supposed to be the 10 Commandments?

S1 -  No, you silly thing......this is the list we made after mama fell getting the mail! When we saw something on Dr. Oz and realized we were woefully unprepared for .....

S2 -  I remember!  It's all the things we need to do to prepare for what to do ...(slowly)..in case.....

S1 -  In case someone is sick.....we need updated medical records and meds lists!

S2 -  In case someone is moving.....

S1 - In case......there's an....

        (They lean over together conspiratorially)

S1 and S2 -  An emergency!

S1  - That's why we called it the 'God Forbid' list....

S2 -  In case someone falls down.....

S1 and S2 - (Together)  God forbid!

S1 -  In case there's some horrible hurricane.....

S2 - With flooding!

S1 - And no electricity!

S2 -  Or a fire!

S1 and S2 -  God forbid!

S2 -  Or if......(hushed)  someone......

S1 -  (Loud)  Don't say it!

S2 - (Quickly)  If someone dies!

S1 and S2 -  GOD FORBID!

         (They hug each other)

S2 - But look at the list...exactly...out of the whole list......how many of these things did we actually do?

(They examine the list carefully and start laughing)

S1 -  Not this......no wills done yet!

S2  -  And certainly no emergency preparations!  Wait, I think....I think we did two things!

S1 -  (Surprised)  Really?  (Doubtful)  Which ones?

S2 -  Number 2 -  MAKE A LIST!

S1  -  You're right....and here's another.......Send List to Each Other!  We did that, too!

S2 -  Two out of.....(counts) 37!

S1 -  That's definitely a percentage...or is it a fraction?

S2 -  Yes......it's definitely a percentage or a fraction......and we can also say a big thank you, because none of the horrible things happened......

S1  -  That's the best part......And we wish it for all of you in Senior Channel Land!  A God Forbid List that never needs to be done!

(They turn to leave, stop, look back)

S2 -  Is this our last show?

S1 and S2 -  GOD FORBID!

(They laugh and exit - may you have no need to catch up on your God Forbid list!)

Monologue Mania Day #933 Patience by Janet S. Tiger (c) Sept. 2,  2016

                                  Patience
(for the as yet untitled play )

                                               by Janet S. Tiger

It's best to read this one first - I Can Wait as it is the first scene in this as yet untitled play

This is from the end of the second scene

(Sean is older now, 28, and the scene is reminiscent of the opening scene, a birthday, but not fully ready yet.  Sean and Moira's daughter, Kelly, 20, have been talking because she cannot understand why he isn't interested in marrying any of the girls he's been seeing in town)

(Irish accent) You ask me where I learned m' patience from, well, I can ya, it was from a most impatient man, m' dear dead father, who taught me well.....I was little, maybe four, five years old, and it was dinner time and I was hungry, and m' mum had put a plate of sausages on the table and I grabbed one....

          (He reaches out, tastes it)

She was a terrible cook, God rest her soul, but thank the Lord, even she couldn't ruin a sausage!

She told me to wait until dinner, but then me dad saw, and he took the sausage away.....and he....beat me.

And when he was done he stood me by the table and told me I had to wait to eat until he gave me permission to eat, and I stood there, in pain, and watched them all eat, m' sisters and brothers.... and finally, I couldn't take it, and I reached out.....

        (He reaches out)

And he beat me again......and when me mum tried to stop it......(shudders) he smacked her across the face........all the beatings.....when he hit ma......(he sighs deeply)......that was what hurt the most......

So for two weeks he did this.....and my ma would give me nibbles before dinner, so I could hold out better, and.....I learned to be patient.....

But part o' life is knowing.....when to be patient.....and when to do somethin'......the day I turned twelve, I decided to do somethin'.....I left....he'd turned my mum into a drunken old lady.....and I'll always hate him for that......but i had to go.....so I took what little I had....and I stole from him......all the beer I could carry.......and I left......and I didn't get far.....because even though I wasn't a small boy, .....the first beer ya have......that knocks you out!

(He remembers, throwing something imaginary and wobbling)

I took the empty bottles and pitched them through the windows in m' dad's pub!  What a sound it made!  Breakin' glass....breakin' out!  It felt like I had just started to be alive!

And then the police showed up......and I was sicker than a horse with the choke!  They knew my dad, and that he deserved much worse than a broken window!......and they......they saved m' life.....they took me here......

And that was 16 years ago......today......and I have your ma since the moment I opened me eyes and saw her beautiful face.....

       (He closes his eyes, remembering)

And that, m'dear Kelly, is why I have patience ......and it's the only thing I can thank my father for.......that and his beer......because if I hadn't taken action.....and gotten drunk!.......I never woulda ended up here.......

Have you never seen something so beautiful your heart just ached to look at it? Somethin' that takes your breath away......  a sunset, a horse, or maybe ....maybe that young man who comes to sell us new gadgets too many times a month?

(He smiles as she blushes and turns away)

Somethin' that , that....even when you ache to call it yours.......you have the patience to wait see it again..because...it is just so perfect, even though you know nothing is....it will always be perfect in your eyes...........Well, that's the way I feel about your ma......

(The lights dim on them as we hear some people approaching.  End of this part of the scene)

Monologue Mania Day #932 Frozen (opening scene- revised)  (c) Sept. 1,  2016

One day, I will finish all these plays......and if you believe that, I have a nice bridge for you in Brooklyn.......(but I hope to finish this one someday, I can see it onstage!)

Original post -  Day# 258   Frozen (opening)   Oct. 28, 2014

(We see a young man on a hospital bed, he is not moving at all, with all types of tubes in him.  The sound of machines beeping.  He suddenly sits up and the tubes remain behind.  He looks around, starts to smile and jumps out of bed, now starts laughing and then, skipping.   He looks at the audience, smiles.)

Pretty good for a guy in a coma, huh?

Well, watch this.

             (He does a handstand/cartwheel.)

It's amazing what you can do in your head.  I realized I have to talk to someone, and since no one can hear me speak, I'll have to talk to all of you in my head.

(Points to the back)  You, Coach Richardson - I could always talk with you about anything.   And you gave me good advice.   And over there (he indicates someone in the front)  Aunt Ella, I'm gonna sit and have some cookies with you and make you laugh and laugh!

(He eats a cookie and bends over laughing)

And I can talk to you anytime I want!

(He goes back to the hospital bed and points at it.)

I've been in there over five years now.

            (Shudders while remembering)

At first, I wanted to die.   You see, I cannot move a muscle.  Interesting expression.  But this is the situation -

             (He illustrates while talking)

...I was 23, in good shape, just had dinner with my friends....(rubs his stomach)  we had steak....I remember how delicious it was....and .I was driving home (indicates a steering wheel)   I hadn't been drinking......but the guy in the other car was wasted .....................so... BOOM!

I wake up here, and when I try to move....nothing.   But I can hear everyone talking - and worse, I can feel everything!   Every bone that was broken, every time they jab me....I can feel the pain, but no one knows.

It's kind of like being invisible...or frozen.  The only one who knows I'm still in here is my mother.   She comes every day, and she talks to me, and (this is hard for him) she tries to get them to understand that I'm still in here.

But no one listens to her either.   Well, they pretend to listen.  But they're humoring her, I can tell.   They feel sorry for her.   Her only son, and he's a vegetable and she's just watering him.

(Deep sigh)  The first few months I wanted to die.  I prayed to die.   I prayed to reach my mother to let me die.  And then I realized I was like a tree, only not growing.  A petrified tree.  (Laughs a little)

And then I realized that since people didn't know I could hear them, they would say things and do things.

Like Nurse Gonzales......(he bends over to indicate a little nurse, imitating her voice).......Mister Bautner, I am going to change you now, please excuse me.  Ooh, you have a little doody today.......I am going to clean it up and you will be all nice and fresh....

(Back to himself)  In some ways I feel like an animal - people see an animal, but assume the animal doesn't understand.   (Changes)  But what if the animal did understand?  What if he heard something that the person figured he never would be able to act upon.....That's why I don't want to die anymore, you see....I know something.   Knowledge IS power.  It is the power that is keeping me going.  It is the inner strength that now has me praying to have my mother find a way to help me - rather than let me die.

You see.....someone told me a secret.  Actually, many people tell me secrets - most of them are very boring.  The man who cleans this room for the last year has a girlfriend in the pharmacy - and a wife in Mexico.  The nurse who used to give me sponge baths is addicted to soap operas. Everyone has a secret to tell me - like I was a priest....a silent priest......it helped pass the time.....and then... (he is remembering) ...then.....someone told me a different kind of secret.   A very bad secret. They figured their secret was safe with me!  That I could never repeat it, because I..... never heard it.

But the person who told me had no idea that knowing this secret has inspired me to live so that I can.....(stops to listen)  They're coming back...a nurse, a doctor, a janitor...a visitor?   No, not after 5 years.  Probably just someone to check my diaper.  That's always fun.  So ..... I think I'll get back into my body.

              (He moves towards the bed.)
What's the secret?  (Laughs loudly)  Do you think you can get away with hearing it in only a few minutes?  What has taken me years of being frozen to hear?  (Holds up his arms)   Okay, I'll give you a clue....someone died....and no one knows it was murder....except the murderer.....and me....

(He gets into the bed as we hear voices coming.  Blackout.)
