(The woman comes out, she will be busy throughout this monologue)

Busy day - but, of course, it's always a busy day

I am up early as always.   Preparing food.
And preparing for a doctor's appointment.  Not for me, for my husband.  My appointments are far away, in a distant month.
Often re-scheduled due to emergencies.  But I digress.

So - prep for breakfast, and getting ready for the day.

My husband has a simple breakfast - tea, oatmeal and raisins, the oatmeal has to be measured out so he gets enough calories.  He is diabetic - we have to be very careful monitoring his food so he doesn't lose too much weight.  I have to remember to have out his silverware, glass, napkin, etc.

Am already a bit tired, and the day is young.

I do his glucose reading - then the drops for his eyes.

His tea, and his meds - vitamins, several others for his cholesterol, etc.  No insulin, thank God, his diabetes is well managed.

After breakfast, clean up.

Do I eat?  In between!  Always in between

Then to get ready for the doctor's appointment.

Taking care of his feet is time-consuming and painstaking.
Several of his diabetic wounds have re-opened, requiring extra debriding. So this is 15-30 min a day now, sometimes 2 and 3 times a day.

Shaving, dressing, getting his things ready for dr.
They pick him up for appointment
While he is at his appointment I call other doctors to make other appointments.
This is a time consuming event, too,
since he will probably be having a procedure soon.

But there are other appointments - for his eyes, feet.
And they have to be juggled with my father's appointments.

So, time-consuming.  How much time?  Should I look at the phone?  Does waiting for their calls back count?  Since I am also doing laundry while waiting?
Changing the bedding, making the bed.
Two loads in the machine, no three, his socks need a wash, too.

Each item of time - is it part of the caregiving or just part of a day?
Days that never seem to end.

He returns from the doctor's appointment - he was two hours away, yet I was doing caregiving duties for much of that time.
Including getting lunch ready.
(and dealing with my father who calls to discuss his VA appointment tomorrow)

Lunch, then clean up, then outside for exercise.  He does a lot - this is very good.  But....each year, he is able to do less.  Maybe the procedure on his artery will help and he will be able to do more.  I prefer to focus on that than the other possibilities.

Why am I tired?  Not one of the things I have to do is hard.  Not even the worrying.  All of these chores take only a few minutes.....what are they worth?

The day proceeds.  Somehow, it is almost dinner.  I have spent a little time on a writing project- 30 minutes maybe....did I squeeze in one hour for me?  A walk, yes, that, too.  Is that caregiving if it's to take care of me?
Do I count?

Then we get to dinner, and getting that ready and cleaned up (an hour, hour and a half- the time flows like a river)  which  means prep for the next day.

The beans are washed and set on the stove to soak for the night.  In the morning, I will wash them again, then prep for cooking, but I'm getting ahead of myself, kind of like a preview for a hit TV show - Caregivers of San Diego County!

Bedtime means washing up, checking the feet, making sure all is ready for a safe night.  And so it ends, another day of caregiving.  I thank God for the opportunity to be able to help - for I would rather be the person helping, than the one in the wheelchair getting help.

I am keeping track of what I do because I am doing a survey on caregiving - and the money they give me, I plan to use it well - on a vacation...for me!  But for today......today is now over.

And tomorrow is another day -at Tara.....oh, wait, I saw this movie before.  Or maybe I'm just watching the rerun.......Night!

(She does not exit, but remains onstage, head lowered for some sleep, until
the whole monologue repeats....and repeats....and repeats....and repeats...like two
mirrors facing each other until something happens and one of them breaks.....)

(This is an older Japanese actor, but he stands tall and walks smoothly, he is holding a magazine article)

See, it says right here – diversity.  Everyone wants diversity.  Ha!  When they say age diversity, they mean any age, as long as they look like a baby!

        (Listens)

Ok, here’s my diversity story, and you as an actor will understand.

So, I am Japanese, you know, that rules me out of 99.5% of all the roles.  But on one count, I get knocked out of 100% of all the roles!  You don’t know, you’re still young, but when you’re old, hey, you are out!

You know how old I am?  Yeah, 78 is what I tell them, but I’m thinking of moving it back to 74.

            (Listens)

How old am I really?  You can keep a secret, right?  I am really 84!

            (Smiling)

You never thought it, did you?  That was real surprise, not just acting!  I can tell.  Have a lot of practice with doctors when they first look at the medical reports.  First look is the truth.  If they smile in their eyes, everything is ok.  If the pupils dilate, then they smile that big fake smile, whoa, you got trouble!

(Quickly)  No, I’m fine!  And if I was sick, would I tell anyone?  That’s their biggest complaint, old people will get sick on opening night.  How many times does that happen……okay, maybe that big lady with the heart condition when they did Our Town….(listens)  Okay, back to my favorite audition.

So, I hear about this incredible part for….(remembering, quoting) ‘Japanese man, 70s, in an internment camp’  Wow!  A part made for me!  I was born in one of those camps!  And I had been watching this playwright, he’s good, I know it’s gotta be a good play!

So I go and get my hair colored, and I have them leave in a couple of streaks of gray– and I stand up straight and I walk in and I aced it!  The people listening applauded!  You know what that’s like!  It was fantastic!  I know I got the part!  Only two other people tried out – both babies!  And one was a white baby!

            (Shakes his head)

And then they give the part to……one of the babies!  A man who is 39!
Can you believe it?  39!   And I know he is really 41, but he lies to get parts!  (Very upset) You can’t win!  I can’t win!  And get this, he won BEST ACTOR in a our local critics awards!

(Laughs, shakes head, calms a bit, turns to leave, stops, looks back)
The best part was, the reason they didn’t pick me....they told me…..…..’I looked too young for the part!’

(Exits laughing and continuing to hope for age diversity!)

A true story…….

Setting
Cell phone store outside

Characters
MRS. SUMMER – older, nicely dressed
KEITH – 20s, T-shirt with phone company name on it, hat

Time
 Now, very now

(MRS. SUMMER -older, dressed nicely -comes out of phone store. The young man – Keith, in his 20s, beanie cap, T-shirt, is closing the door, smiling.  She is holding phone, talking)

MRS. SUMMER -  Thank you!  I really appreciate your help, I mean this is the third bad phone
from your company, but you have been very nice, and I’m sure that this time is the lucky one!
KEITH – We are happy to help you in any way!

MRS. SUMMER -  I know, you stayed open an extra 10 minutes just for me!   Now, just to be
clear, this is guaranteed for another year, right?
KEITH – As long as you don’t submerge the phone, drop it from higher than 4 feet, or put it in
the microwave!

MRS. SUMMER -  I think I can still never do those things….
KEITH -  Well, thank you again for your patronage for….(looks at his clipboard)…the last 15
years.

MRS. SUMMER -  Bye!

(The phone rings, she waves and takes the call as he locks the door behind her.)
MRS. SUMMER -  Honey!  It works!  I can hear you perfectly…..What?  (Louder)  Can you
hear me now?

(She looks at the phone and starts pushing buttons)

MRS. SUMMER -  Maybe I pushed something…..can you hear me now?  Great?  What?  Now I
can’t hear you!  (Shakes phone, listens)  What happened?  Where’d you go?

            (Punches in number, listens)

MRS. SUMMER -  No network available?  I’m standing outside your damned store, what the
hell do you mean, no network available?

(She turns around and tries to get the attention of the young man)

MRS. SUMMER -  Hey, you, mister!  (She looks at the paper)  You, Keith!  I can see you!  The
phone is not working!

(He pretends not to see her, then she knocks on the door, louder, until he finally –very reluctantly – comes to the door, and opens it a crack)

KEITH -  I’m sorry, but we’re closed now.
MRS. SUMMER – I know you’re closed!  I was the last customer!  I was here for two hours
while you tried to straighten up the mess that is my phone!  And it worked while I was in the store, BUT NOW IT HAS STOPPED WORKING!

KEITH – (Too calm)  I can see you’re frustrated….

MRS. SUMMER -  Really?  What gave you that clue?  The steam coming out of my ears?

KEITH -  What seems to be the problem now?

MRS. SUMMER -  Seems to be?  Seems to be?  What seems to be is that your NEW phone has
the same problems the old phone did!  It DOES NOT WORK!

KEITH -  (Doesn’t want to do this) I can’t let you in the store, we’ve locked up the
register…..but I can look at your phone…

MRS. SUMMER – (Looking around)  Is this a dream?  One of those bad dreams I get when the
phone acts extra weird?  Can you pinch me?

KEITH -  I’m sorry, but we are not allowed to touch our customers…..just their phones…..

(She hands the phone to him, and he punches the buttons)

MRS. SUMMER -  You see, not working!

(Keith takes the phone and pokes at it)

MRS. SUMMER -  (Getting more and more angry) You promised!  You said it was okay!  I am
hungry and tired and I want to go home!  This is insane….you know, in that movie Terminator, they have the computers taking over the world….but maybe, maybe they have already!  Maybe….maybe you’re a part of it….AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

(She backs away from him and runs off, horrified.  He watches her, then realizes he has her phone)

KEITH -  Wait, I have your…..

            (Shakes his head)

KEITH – (As Schwarzenegger would sound)  You’ll be back!.....

(He laughs, looks around, then, he takes out his phone, which looks a bit different and puts his tongue on it.)

KEITH -  Yeah, it’s me…….another one over the edge…..that’s the plan…..

(He now removes the hat he has on and we see on his head……antenna.  He laughs as he exits)

KEITH – One at a time…..that’s all it takes……

(The end…….. of our civilization as we know it)
