(Actor is young, kind of itchy)

Hey, your grandmother's still alive, right?  I mean, she lives with you.....and that's nice.  But maybe you can help me.....I mean....what's the big deal?  I mean, hey, what is damn big deal?  My grandmother is ok, I love her, right?  She is great, a lotta fun, and when I was little, she used to sneak me M&Ms when my mom had me on restriction, grandma was cool....but now, she is sayin' stuff I just don't get!

I mean, she always complains about gettin' old, says her bones hurt.  Ok, I got it, she has that arthritis.  But then,  like we went to the beach and she said that when she was kid, she could swim all the way out, way, way out, but she always had the strength to swim back in to the shore.....

And that there was no way I could understand this, because I was young.  Wow, I hate when the adults tell me shit like that.  But she was looking at the ocean, and I don't know, her eyes looked funny and she said, oh, don't worry, I can still swim all the way out!

And we laughed.....but then she said.....'it's the getting back I don't think I can do anymore.....

Whaddaya mean?  She just looked at me and smiled, at least she didn't say that crap about understanding more when I was older......and then she put her arm around me and, she smiled and said.....maybe you'll understand one day...when you're older.......Damn she just had to go ruin a really nice moment!Well, that was two months ago!  And I'm two months older and I still don't get it.....

(Turns to leave, listens, shakes head....)

Maybe,  you're right....maybe.....I don't wanna get it....

           (Shakes his head, exits)

(A man rolls onto the stage in a wheelchair.  He is not fast, but steady.  He faces the audience and takes a party whistle blower and blows it - twice.)

Thank you for letting me come onto the Senior Channel show, Senior Moments, because, everyone, today is a special day........ today is my birthday!

            (He blows the blower again)

The big 0ne- oh.....oh!

That's right......
100 years!

            (He blows again)

When I was younger – in my fifties! – anyone who got to be a hundred was very special - they were on TV, and it was a big deal.  Now, nothing.  We are average – in fact, there was something in the paper that said….hold on, let me find it….

(He searches in his lap, pulls out a newspaper, reads.)

Says right here that, ‘100…is the new….60!’

            (He laughs loudly)

Well, that’s a pile!

But not the point!  Today is special not just because it’s my birthday, but because I have a birthday twin…….and we are going to call him and tell him ‘Happy Birthday’ on television!

Here….

(He now pulls a cell phone from his lap and pushes one button.)

They fixed it that all I have to do is push once…..and these days, that’s about all I can do…………if you know what I mean….  Hey, Lester, it’s me, Patrick, yeah, Happy Birthday!  I got everyone in TV-land here to sing to you…….

(Holds the phone up, indicates the audience is to sing)

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to me, HappyBirthday dear Lester and Patrick, Happy Birthday to us!

Yeah, I’ll call you later, old buddy…..have a great day!

            (He closes the phone)

No, Lester is not the same age, just the same day!  That’s why we’re birthday twins –but he’s just a young pup…he’s only 98!

Lester and I grew up on the same street – but we are blood brothers now.  I married his sister, may she rest in peace, and had four beautiful children with her, so, it may be a little backwards, but we are related by blood!

Now, my birthday used to be…. April first…that’s right April Fool’s Day.  Everyone always had fun with that- I was the ‘April Fool.’

But, yes, you heard me, it ‘used to be’ my birthday.  Betcha didn’t know you could switch, didja?

             (Takes a deep breath)

As the story goes, my father was killed in the Great War – World War I.  My mother remarried a musician – he was a little crazy, but he adopted me and was a generally decent stepfather.  He didn’t beat us, he was a nice guy overall, when he was around…..

After my mother died, he died right away, like he had to go visit her again….and I got to go through all the papers.  Now that…..as they say now on those silly TV shows…. is a fun job…(spits it out, loud)…NOT!

Especially since I found out that, not only was he not my father, which I already knew, but my mother was not my mother – she had adopted me, on April 1st…..which had become my birthday.

Let me tell you, it’s like being in a book, or a movie, where the main character wakes up and finds out that everything was a dream!

And the worst part was, I was sixty, and even if I had had the energy to go out and look for my real parents – which I didn’t – because finding this out, made 60 into the new 100.

I was stunned.  What else was a lie?

Could I trust anyone?

And then Lester came to visit and said to me – ‘doesn’t matter who your parents are, all that matters, is who YOU are.'

Lester never talked a lot, I was the one who did the talking, but when he spoke, it usually made sense.

So I stopped worrying about looking for the past.  Saved me a lot of time.

But I did do one thing – I petitioned the court to change my birthday – which I had always hated anyways.  People don’t know you can do that once – as long as there was an adoption, and there is no fraud involved.

            (Laughs, a little bitterly)

At least, no fraud on my part.

So……I switched the day legally….to March 30th……Lester’s birthday.  So we are not only blood brothers, but birthday twins.

            (He lifts his arms)

Happy Birthday to us, Lester!

            (He turns to the side)

At 100, I know my time is up!  And I don’t need any help from you young people!  I can do this myself!

(He turns to wheel off….looks back)

Almost forgot…not a surprise at this age, just an excuse……this morning I got an amazing phone call.  You see, we married young, Lester’s sister and I, and had our first child when we were just 20….first grandchild at 41, great grandchild at 62….great-great grandchild at 81 – and last night, a new baby was born….my first…..

            (Counts on his fingers)

Great….great…..GREAT….that’s three greats!...grandchild……

Just after midnight……so now, we have another birthday twin, Lester…..

Happy Birthday to us all!

            (He rolls off)

And many more!

            (Not the end for awhile.)

Monologue Mania Day # 1379  The Last Time by Janet S. Tiger (c) Nov. 24, 2017

From the past - THE FIRST TIME. Female  Day # 324   Male Day # 325
I think they could go together

                                                            The Last Time

              (Actor enters with photo album)

It's a funny thing how first times are so often anticipated with a great deal of excitement. Notice I said excitement..... now that can be both good or bad. The first time you do anything as a child is exciting and you very often remember. Maybe not the first step or the first word ....but you don't have to remember those because.....your parents always remember ......

First smile .....your parents will talk about it ......the first smile, the first laugh .....the first joke ...... and then throughout life many many firsts ......it's the first time you go to school first time you ride a bike..... first time you kiss someone. And for most of the firsts..... remembered forever..... or until the day you die.....which could also be forever, but that's another story..

But the last time you do something... now that's different. It is very rarely something that is looked forward to .....except in the case of horrible job. The last time you have to go into that horrible, hateful office..... the last time you have to see the people you don't like. But the last time with people ....that has a completely different sensation.

The last time you see someone. Because you never really sure the last time you will see someone unless of course they die and you wait to see them in your dreams or in another world.

The last time you leave the house that you grew up in. You leave the house you look back you wonder where your life is leading you and it is a bittersweet experience usually. Because even if you did not like the house there were good memories and it somehow, sometimes.... even if the house has grown you to what you are.

And then throughout your life...... the last time you see your friends from school because you're all graduating and you don't realize that in some cases you may never see those friends again...... if it is wartime, then some might not make it through .....but even if it is not war time you have no idea what the future brings ever.

On one of the last times I saw him, a good friend told me a very sad thing when he said to me as he faced the end of his life he realized you never think about it but one day you realize that there will be a day ......when you have had the last sex of your life.

Immediately I was annoyed with him because thinking about anything that is the last time is a horrible thought! And then I started thinking about all the other last times that were coming for me because I'm getting older.

When you're young you never think in terms of the last time

When you're young the last time really just refers to getting out of school you are much more concerned with first times!

But now as I approach my birthday I look at the people I take care of....... and I see a different world.

My mother is 91 and she is taking us all to Thanksgiving dinner tonight as she has done every year except twice - once when I was in the hospital having a baby, the other,  the year we moved and my daughter insisted on having Thanksgiving once in our house. After a busy night and all the clean up my daughter realized what a gift taking us out was.

Tonight my mother takes us out again to a restaurant which is harder to find in the reasonable price range now. But we will all be together and that is the main thing because I wonder as I do every year.... will this be the last time we are all together like this. The last time.....what a treasure!

The last time your mother says out loud I love you.....

The last time your father can walk by himself to his car without a wheelchair....

The last time you talk to a friend on the phone ...

The last time you ever see a friend in person and get to hug them.....

The last time the friend remembers you.....

The last time you visit the friend's grave......

The last time you see your children as young anymore because they are now grown up with their own lives......

But they will always be your children ........there will never be a last time for that.....
