(Isaac has listened to Ariana complain about how long she has studied math - and how she hates it. -Day # 804 - He shakes his head)

Okay, I guess you may have a point, but maybe, just maybe... I can let you see how amazing numbers are.....when I was much younger, my mom tried to get me into the Bible, but, surprisingly enough, the only book I liked was, can you guess?

Numbers!

I had just learned about the idea of infinity, and I was still floating!  When you think about it, even a little, you can't think about it anymore because it's, it's unending!  Millions, billions, googles of numbers!

And it's all based on .....plus one.  You add one and you keep adding, and it never stops.  Never ends.  Infinity!   And this idea has been here....since we could figure it out.  And so....as long as there are numbers.....there is infinity......you could depend on numbers...the fact there was always another one...it was...reassuring.......

This world is finite.  Everything has a beginning.....and an end.  But numbers!  Hey!  They never end!  .......In a world of things that end....like friendships when the person moves away, like marriages.when your parents don't get along...like your favorite dog...when it....dies.....the fact that you can imagine there is no end......that was something...very comforting....

          (Lights down.  End of scene)

(Carrying a book and a plastic container, the actor enters.  Okay, maybe the writer)

Here are two items most people would consider to be disparate, completely unrelated.  This....

        (Holds up the book)

Is one of my all time favorite books - GONE WITH THE WIND....and this....is something I also love...

        (Holds up the plastic container)

A nice portion of chocolate pudding.

Why do I put them together?  Because today is a special day....Chocolate Pudding Day!

How could that possibly relate to Gone With The Wind ?

Think for a minute....it's really very obvious.

I'll give you a clue.....

(Opens the container and takes a spoonful of the pudding)

Mmm......

         (Opens the book)

And now........

(Starts to read, stops, looks up)

It took Margaret Mitchell seven years to write this book.  It took me seven minutes to write this monologue, which is now over....because I cannot think of anything when I am eating pudding and reading Gone With the Wind.

(As lights dim, the writer is eating the chocolate pudding and reading the book.  On this first week of summer, please consider doing the same!)

Monologue Mania Day # 1228 Proving Grounds  by Janet S. Tiger (c) June 25, 2017

This monologue connects with Day #1226 - The Guard From Ponar.
Maybe it will be part of a play one day, we'll see.

(The man enters, in his 50s, an academic.  He carries a shovel and a trowel)

This is what we used in the past.  And I, myself, I rarely need to get my hands dirty.

(He waves at one side of the stage.)

This is the machinery we use now.

Because the material in that region was primarily sand it was favorable for GPR -Ground penetrating Radar but the forest was very dense, so we decided to try ERT - Electrical Resistive Tomography....which sends electrical currents into the earth, measuring the resistivity....up to 100 feet deep.

We would take the data, and feed it into the computer that used software to convert the information into a picture we could see - and there it was.......a thin sliver of red against the background of blue.  It was a tunnel.

The men who dug this tunnel are all dead.  But they had told the story of how they dug the tunnel to survive what they knew would be their fate.  Death at the hands of the Nazis who used these men to dig up Nazi victims - and then burn the evidence.

The tunnel was 110 feet long.  It took them digging with their hands and spoons they used to eat the slop the Nazis gave them.  Of the 80 men who tried to escape, 11 survived the war.  They told the story of the tunnel to their descendants.

But their children did not know if it was a story told by desperate survivors - there was no proof until this new technology helped us find....the proof...which is why I call this area.....the proving grounds. It took the men about 68 days to dig the tunnel - and it took 75 years to find it again.

It is vital that we continue to prove what happened in the past.  Because there are those who deny these events existed - and because the people who died there cannot speak, we must stand up for them.

So I ask you, the richest men in the world, to donate a tiny portion of your winnings to help us develop more of this wonderful technology.    Because the past is disappearing, and without your help, it will disappear without a trace.......

(Turns to leave, stops, holds up the shovel looks back)

Had I been born 80 years ago, I might have been using one of these shovels to did up dead bodies, too....

(He exits, with a bowed head, in honor of those who cannot speak)

My Vacation Daze is below this - because, for once, I am on vacation!

(The woman who now takes the wheelchair is laughing)

I don't have a lot to say this week, but I do have a question.  One I've had a few minutes to think about during the time spent waiting for doctors.

Why is everyone so upset at the thought of being abducted by aliens?  I for one, am looking forward to it - it might be the only vacation I get!

So I have put a sign on my front porch that I hope they can see, and it says, 'Here I Am - Come and Get Me!'

(She gets out of the chair, looks back)

So far, no luck......but I keep hoping!

(The others applaud as she sits)

---------------------------------------------
Vacation Daze - my own!  To let my faithful readers know that today, tomorrow and Monday will probably have re-runs, and to give a slight explanation.  (For those wondering, no, the aliens did not get me.....at least I don't think so)

For so long, I have been so busy, that now that I actually have a couple of days off, I am not sure what to do with them!

So will I waste my whole day on wondering what to do?

Or will I go to the beach?

Or sleep?

Or write something I want to write?  It takes me a moment to actually realize I can devote my entire day to ....me.  It brings back memories of other vacations, so that I can savor them while I savor my time now.

The first vacation I remember set the tone for my life view of vacation - vacation is a great thing.  After a car trip that took a year or two (I was five or six so the two hours seemed liked that - are we there yet?)  We stayed  at the Campbell Inn, and I remember the bug zapper that killed the mosquitos and other flying insects every night on the porch.

The river where Ronny (an older man of ten) took me rowing while my father ran on the shore waving and yelling for us to come back.

The pool where I learned to swim.  The meals and the differentness of it all.

True, maybe there were annoyances - my father left my sister's suitcase at home, the ride was ten years long (it always expands in the telling) always issues - but overall, nothing compares to the first view of the room, the experiences, the new people...the memories.

And then the safety of the return home. (which was a million years long, but so nice to be home!)

The vacation -what an amazing invention!

To do the new......maybe that's why I'm still doing these monologues....it is my tiny moment of vacation in often long days.....thank you all for coming along on the trip.........
